New agreement with Coast Guard for maintenance saves the power and integrity of the Fire Island Beacon.

Great news! Fire Island would not be the same without its grand, sweeping light.

Good for the Fire Island folks, and thanks for taking an active stance! This will make it a private aid to navigation, joining others like St. Augustine and (I believe) Bodie Island where the lighting apparatus is now owned by the owner of the tower.

I agree it's great that a Lighthouse group and it's members are willing to do this.

Unfortunately there are not groups able to do this everywhere and the government has little choice but to replace these types of lanterns due to the cost and difficulty of repairing and maintaining them.

Good to hear...even if it's an aerobeacon, it's become part of the light's character. To me, the smaller optics are just as bad looking as an empty lantern room. At least aeros have some substance.

And...though I'm not completely versed in CG procedure...now that the FI group has taken over the beacon, are they in control of what goes in the lantern (any changes being approved by the CG, of course)?

They can't change the optic without permission.

Yes, Bodie Island is now classified as a private aid to navigation.

Grettings, all.

There had been talk of this for years. The Fire Island Light was supposed to get a VRB-25 not long after Montauk Point (I think this was about 5 or so years ago), but when everyone saw how pathetic the light was and how it made the lantern room look, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society decided to look for a way to keep the DCB-224. Thankfuly, the FILPS is a strong group that knows how to get things done.

It would have been a crime to see Fire Island lose that powerful beam sweeping out over the Great South Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Three cheers for the FILPS!

Fantastic! Congratulations to the Fire Island group for such a successful endeavor. Another piece of history has been saved.
