The Avery Point Light is in danger of collapse!!! If work does not begin on repairs to the tower soon, we will lose a very unique light. Avery Point is the only light built to honor lighthouse keepers. I urge you to send a donation to the following address:

Avery Point Lighthouse Society
P.O. Box 1552
Groton, CT 06340

You can also make a donation via PayPal from their site, Avery Point Lighthouse Society Hurry, only months are left!!!

I was under the impression that work had begun at Avery Point. The rumor I heard was that work had begun and continued funding of this work was in jeopardy. I remember recently seeing some scaffolding around it and thought the light had been removed. Am I wrong?!

The lantern room was removed in December 2001.
Further information on the delays in restoration can be found in the Avery Point website referrenced above.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Check out the March issue of Lighthouse Digest to see Avery Point graphically depicted with the missing bricks. The light had to be removed because it was felt it would not last the winter atop the lighthouse. What a shame! frown
