A lighthousing friend forwarded to me an email they received from OBC today.

Quote:

FROM: OUTER BANKS CONSERVATIONISTS
SUBJECT: CURRITUCK BEACH LIGHT NEEDS YOUR HELP
DATE: February 12, 2003

LIGHTHOUSE APPLICATION UPDATE: Last Friday, we delivered our application to the US Department of the Interior for transfer of the lighthouse to our non-profit group. The first round of review is during the next few weeks.

PLEASE CALL THESE KEY PEOPLE NOW
To Express Your Support for our Application
And Our 22-Year Preservation Efforts at
The Currituck Beach Light Station:

*Secretary of the Interior - Gale Norton : 202/208-7351
*Assistant Secretary - Dan Smith : 202/219-1688
*Senator John Edwards, D-NC : 202/224-3154
*Senator Elizabeth Dole, R-NC : 202/224-6342

Your rallying cry kept Congressman Walter Jones from circumventing the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000 and giving the lighthouse directly to Currituck County. Your voice can make a difference again!
Thank you for your continuing support! Please forward this message to anyone you feel may be concerned about the lighthouse.

I, too got this message. The situation seems to be getting desperate. I truly hope that OBC gains ownership of this lighthouse.

Here is an update in today's Virginia Pilot:

It looks as though the congressional bill submitted last fall will not be reintroduced.

maybe....just maybe....the playing field has been "leveled" alittle bit more than it was a month ago and OBC's chances are getting better with each passing day....atleast that's what I keep telling myself. I attended a meeting of the Outer-Banks LH Society this past weekend and, privately, there is a shared sense of reserved optimism that wasn't there 3 months ago when I attended the last one. I guess we'll all know the outcome in about a month...keep your finger's crossed and keep writing letters!!
