Prospect Harbor Lighthouse - Update

The restoration of Prospect Harbor Lighthouse is now scheduled and confirmed for August 16. This is expected to be a ten-day fast moving project. This will be the smallest and fastest restoration project we have ever done, but it is vital, since it will save the historic wooden tower from collapse.

We are still in need of a crane to remove and lift off the lantern room. If anyone can help with a donated crane please call Joe Lebherz in Friendship, Maine at 207-832-7385.

If we can not get a crane donated and confirmed in the next couple of weeks we will need to hire, confirm and commit with a private contractor to keep the project on time.

Anyone wishing to volunteer during that week to keep costs down can also call Joe.

The work will include removing the 3 ½ ton lantern room, replacing the catwalk decking that the lantern room sits on, and sanding, painting and refitting the windows of the lantern room while it is on the ground. The Coast Guard CEU and Maine SHPO have approved all work as historically compatible and acceptable.

The contractor hired for the project is Walter Spear of Machias Ph # 207-255-3108

The U. S. Navy in Prospect Harbor has volunteered several people. Also, the U. S. Coast Guard has committed 4 personnel, a truck, various tools and 10 days of work, with personnel camping on site.

The project will cost from $12,000 to $18,000, depending on the amount of work and equipment donated. Hopefully, by that date we will have the money raised.

All my best,

Tim Harrison
