Things are set and ready to go, so you may order your Wacko Badges starting now. You will notice that I have decided to use an old (circa 1884) photo of the station. Thanks to John for putting together the order page. And, thanks to Paul for cleaning up and "tweaking" the picture a bit.

Next fall, proceeds from this year's efforts will be forwarded to the St. George Lighthouse Association to help them with the costs of salvaging and rebuilding the light. While it may seem to be only a small drop in the bucket, it will help them. This is a classic example of how many people making a small effort (only $6 a badge) can combine their efforts towards a greater goal (let's say, $1,000)



Remember that John has donated a small number of plain black lanyards that can be purchased, until the supply runs out.

2006 Wacko Badge Order Form

You may send a check or use the PayPal links. You will receive a brief acknowledgement from me when I receive payment. If you send a check, please be sure to include a note with name, address and forum screen name (and do write legibly, please).

If you have friends of collector club members who would like to order a badge they do not have to be Collector Forums members to do so. Many order for spouses and kids. The main difference in the badges is that Forum members screen names are displayed in red on the badge itself, while a non member just has their name showing. (But every $6 helps the light!)

Those participating in the NELL outing on June 3 need to send me an email so I can make your badges first.

Wow! Two weeks into the project and we are half way to the goal of $1000! Great job, and thanks for not only your participation but to those who added a few extra bucks.

Still plenty of time, but if you want one to take to Portsmouth with you, please get it ordered now. I will be on the road to Mackinaw for several days, and when I get back I will have Erie Land Lights to be shipping out to new orders. Then its off to Portsmouth (less than 3 weeks!)

This is my 50th post, so I guess that makes my "Wacko" status official.

Congratulations, Brindfan! It's great to see you posting on a regular basis. Now you need to go for Super Wacko - 500 posts. It will take a little longer but you should have no problem since you post on a daily basis.

Way to go Brindfan. Super Wacko is only 450 some posts away so you should make it easily by Christmas.

The Wacko Badges have a two-rold purpose- basically just what you said.

The main physical purpose is for Forum participants to wear them when attending any lighthouse related events so other Wackos can easily identify them and vice-versa.

The bottom line purpose of the Wacko Badge is to raise money for a specific lighthouse that is undergoing restoration or will be as soon as enough money is raised.

The method used in the past was that we would hold nominations for the lighthouse to be used. We'd get down to several finalists and then vote again and the lighthouse with the most votes would be the photo on the Wacko Badge for that given year.

Dave would then announce he was ready to sell them and put a connection for thier purchase and we Wackos would order them.

Dave makes no money on these. He deducts only the cost of the materials and postage and the rest is then donated to the lighthouse in question- usually in the Fall of a given year.

The process then starts over again for the next year's Badge.

We have literally raised thousands of dollars for a number of lighthouses over the years with this simple project- and helped Wackos find each other in the process.

Hope this explanation helps all those who are not sure what's what with the Wacko badge.

Actually, Dennis, for the past 3 years or so I have absorbed all the costs related - material, supplies, postage, PayPal - so that all proceeds will pass thru to the chosen light. (just don't tell Susan)

Last year we gave a little over $1000 to Pottawatomie Light. So far this year I am at $761 dollars in orders and small additional donations. We need to peddle about 40 more badges to make it to $1000. I think we can do this by fall, and am counting on everyone to help by participating.

This type of project is the perfect proof that many people tossing a few bucks apiece into the kitty can make a difference to a lighthouse groups preservation efforts. For many of the lights we have supported, $1000 is a nice chunk of change.

Needless to say, many thanks to all who have supported this project in the past as well as this year, and to those who will be joining in here in the near future.

I ordered a couple for my grandchildren...Dave adjusted the wording a bit to accomodate them...and they turned out very nice!
Grandparents might want to do this...the kids like it, and it helps towards restoration.

My grandson is six going on...you know, whatever, so I think he liked it that his was just like mine. He also thinks the word "Wacko" is funny, especially when he can say that he and his grandmother are both "Wacko's" when we're in the middle of a large family gathering. :rolleyes:
