The latest round of "I love New York" commercials shows a quick flash of a red-hull ship in the background. It appears to have large white letters on the side of the hull. Unfortunately, the person saying, "I love New York" blocks most of the picture. Has anyone else noticed this boat? Is there a lightship docked in NYC? Inquiring minds on the east coast, where it is near freezing and we managed to dodge any accumulating snow from this latest storm, would like to know. Bob

The South Street Seaport boasts both a lightship and a lighthouse. The Ambrose Lightship (LV87) and the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse are there. I've passed by both numerous times but not as a lighthouse lover. So, I must go back at some point.

FRYING PAN is also tied up in NYC - at the museum that has the aircraft carrier on the West side of Manhattan: [This message has been edited by JChidester (edited 01-07-2002).] [This message has been edited by JChidester (edited 01-07-2002).]

I would assume that the ship gets its name from where it was stationed off of the coast of NC where the shoals looked like a frying pan. More on the Frying Pan Lightship http://www.fryingpan.com/firstframe.html shirin

When I was boarding the ferry to Ellis Island (Jersey side) I noticed a lightship across the street. Is this one of those mentioned above? Never got a chance to visit it.

While in NYC this past New Year's Eve, I happened upon the Ambrose at the South Street Seaport . . . I missed the lighthouse though; guess we'll have to go back soon. Darn! By the way, I heartily recommend a trip to the City for any reason. There are great deals on rooms, meals, theater tickets, and packages to be had, and New York needs the tourists to start coming back NOW.
