While we were on our West Coast trip, Mike and I tried to sit down and list all the lighthouses we have actually seen. Some of them we couldn't actually remember the names of and had to wait until we were home to get the names right. If you were at the Reunion in Providence, we did see quite a few. We figure that we have seen about 90 lights. With more to add in a couple of weeks and this summer. The funny thing is that there are some within an hour or two driving distances that we haven't seen but we've seen all the Oregon lights. So, how many have you actually seen?? Kaiz

At last count, we have visited 134 lighthouses, and have climbed 13 of them. We have done almost all of the land based great lakes lighthouses, and all on the North Carolina lighthouses( last year at the HOTM unveiling weekend). Did 27 Upper Peninsula and lower Michigan Lights on a 4 day weekend. That was our biggest blitz. It was no easy tank as anyone who has driven from Munising to Au Sable light can attest to!

Kaiz- Our "great Tour" last year to New England allowed us to see and photograph 153 L/H's in 26 days. It was the trip of a life time to us since we had never been to New England and we did lots of other thigs along the way (My wife thinks we did nothing but chase L/H's) including see wonderful quaint little towns just full of history, ate the best food found anywhere and best of all, made lots of new friends. We are planning to try the Great Lakes next and do the West Coast after that. Don't think we will ever match the L/H People that have been to all of the L/H's in the U.S. but will sure try!!!
As I said before the best part is the people you meet that enjoy L/H's as much as we do.

My wife and I have seen about 60 altogether. We have been to all the Oregon Lights, 2 in Washington, Point Reyes in CA plus about 40 or so when we were in Providence for the Reunion and our extended vacation afterward.

If I am making the right total, I have seen 144. My memories from each one is great and like so many of you, plan on returning to at least some of them. WA-11, OR-8, CA-24, NY-9, NJ & DE-10, MD-17, VA-7, NC-9, SC-8, GA-5, FL-28, Cananda 2, Denmark-1, Sweden-4, Norway-1.
This coming weekend I will make it 145 when I visit Cape St. George, FL. With the cooler weather this week and a little rain, the mile walk should be okay. Derith

That's easy! 103. My husband gave me a huge wall map of the US and we pin point each lighthouse we have seen. I just came back from Florida where I was able to see 10 in 2.5 days. I, too, enjoy meeting LH fans on these trips. On our way to Cape Lookout last year we met a couple that had seen over 250. WOW!!! This Spring and Fall we plan on going to Cape Cod and Maine for more lighthousing. Great fun!!

Ok, Ok, I'm not embarrased, I've only seen and climbed 5, in Georgia and Florida, but I'm just getting started. I have 2 or 3 more to add this summer.

I have been to over 120 different lighthouses (don't know the exact count), and have worked 6 of those. Not included in this count are a few of the lighted towers sitting off the east coast such as Chesapeake and Diamond Shoals Light Stations. Tim - Keeping the flame lit...

174 "lights" in 48 years. Of those, 138 were stateside, 14 in South America (mostly Brazil), and the balance was in western and central Europe during the 60's. (4 lightships are not included in the above) Oops...A Canadian friend of mine saw this post and reminded me of the 18 lights that we saw during July of '97....'sorry 'bout that....didn't mean to leave out Canada!! Carol,
I believe in the Elastic theory of lighthousing. I do not subscribe, at least for the purposes of this excercise, to the definition that for an aid to be correctly titled a "Lighthouse" it had to have been manned at any point in it's existence.
I also believe that if I have seen it with or without artificial aid it counts.
Saying all that most of the ones counted in NJ meet the most stringent definition of a Lighthouse. Sandy Hook, Navesink, Barnegat, Absecon, Hereford Inlet, East Point, Ludlum Beach (what's left of it), Brandywine Shoal (some sources list this as DE), Cape May,Finn's Point, Tinicum Rear Range, Sea Girt, Chapel Hill, Great Beds (some sources put this one in NY), Tucker's Island (a reproduction) and Conover Beacon (the real strech in the bunch).
Of these lighthouses I've climbed 9. I climbed Sandy Hook that many times in one weekend several times this past year(Volunteer tour Guide).
I admit I've streched a bit, but I can't help it I'm a Wacko.
Dennis

I have seen 16 so far, and always seem to visit the same ones over and over again. Never get tired of seeing them.

This is scary! My human mama, Elinor DeWire, has been visiting lighthouses in the U.S., Canada, and overseas since 1972. She's been to 389 lighthouses to date -- meow-za! Is this woman "fixated with faros" or what? She's headed to Australia in August and will undoubtedly add a few lights Down Under. Keep adding to your lists of visited lighthouses, and don't despair if you've only seen a few -- there's lots of time and many good guidebooks that will get you there. Happy lighthouse-hopping, as we call it in the DeWire family. Meows and purrs to all!

Sorry to say when I was really seeing lighthouses I didn't take time to photograph them.Just the now local ones (Fl.)I cant remember how many times I took bow and beam bearings going around the Keys from fowey rocks to tortugas. Then into Port Aransas Tx,Corpus Christie and Galveston up to Baytown & houston, thru southwest pass up the mississippi river to Baton Rouge. All the way up the east coast to Halifax N.S.Including a few trips up the Hudson river to Albany. Then to get interesting Cuba,Puerto Rico,Curacoa,Aruba Venezuela Cartgena col..Also one trip around South America thru the straits of magellan up the west coast and back thru the canal. For the other side of the atlantic,England,France ,Belguim Holland,Scotland,Down the Elbe River to Hamburg Ger.Then up North in Norway to Bergen &Trondhiem to see the midnite sun.To round it out thru gibraltar to Italy,Egypt thru the Seuz and persian Gulf to Saudi and Iraq.looking back I wish I had thought to take more pictures back then but there where no replicas or collectors club then and lighthouses were still used for thier intended purpose It is great to look back to the past sometimes.Bill O'Brien
