I'm starting this thread to talk about lighthouses that will be affected by Hurricane Rita, so that we can focus the thread in Nothing to Do with Anything on the people that will be affected. This way, we can get an equal focus on both...

It looks like this is going to strike the Texas-LA area. This might deliver a final blow to LA lights severely damaged by Katrina, and injure some TX ones. I'm not sure what's at risk in TX (Zachary...you're the master of this domain...maybe you can help?).

If you want to talk about the people affected, please go here. Let's keep this topic on lighthouses and that topic on people.

Looks like Sabine Pass Lighthouse is right in the path of Rita. We nominated this lighthouse for the CF Exclusive Lighthouse.

From Google Earth: Photo of New Canal Light. Someone posted a way to get current images based on Lat + Long showing the after hurricane view.

The coordinates are:
30.01.37.10 N
90.06.47.96 W

Nice shadow, Yes. Very bad tilt to the channel, NO! I don't like the tilt that we see in the photo.

The Sabine Pass Lighthouse I'm sure got some damage. It's probably still standing but I can't say for sure. I think Ship Shoal was in the path of Rita as well. The 5 lights of the Mississippi River Delta (Pass A L'Outre, Southwest Pass (all 3), and South Pass) were also in the path. If the Old Masonary SWPass tower wasn't destroyed by Katrina, Rita probably took care of it. I'm relatively sure the other 4 lights made it. New Canal is probably still standing, though in worse condition I'm sure. As for Texas lights, it probably only cleared away the remaind of the Galveston South Jetty lighthouse.

More info as I get it

And Weasel58, might I recommend http://www.tinyurl.com to you?

Sabine Pass Lighthouse survived Hurricane Rita. The Cameron Preservation Alliance website is back up and contains a link to a satellite shot taken 9/25/05. laugh laugh
The Lighthouse is still there!

In this picuture after Karina, you can see two of the lighthouses at Southwest Pass. The Masonary tower and the Iron Tower.

Make sure you maximize the picture. The Metal light is at the top almost all the way in the left corner. The Masonary tower is about 1/3 the way down and just to the right of the middle of the picture.

Oh yeah...seeing them both!

The skeleton should show right up when you zoom in. The masonry is at the 90-degree bend of that large river that goes across the middle of the picture.

Yay! Both are there! laugh

This picture I posted was a "Before" picture of New Canal. I was hoping someone could come up with an 'after' shot - based on the coordinates.
