A large storm surge combined with high tide wrecked havoc upon much of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Havre de Grace was no exception. We rode up to HdeG on Friday afternoon, actually after the water had receeded somewhat.

When we got there, the lighthouse was on dry land, but a man told me that the water was up around the base earlier in the day. The next morning in the bagel shop near my home, I heard a man telling the girl at the counter that "the water was half-way up the lighthouse!" Hmmmmm....

And I imagine the recently restored keeper's house will need some more restoring (notice the water line above where the water is):

And remember the Promanade, the really nice boardwalk along the waterfront? Well, that's what it is now, a memory:

All that's left, right in front of the decoy museum (it was over a quarter mile long):

The pilings are still there, so perhaps rebuilding will be a little easier, but the damage estimates for the Promanade alone are $2.5 - 3.0 million.

Thanks for the pictures Larry. My best friend from back in Severna Park, MD was telling me about the damage done to Concord Point and Piney Point yesterday. She had mentioned the boardwalk promanade at Concord Point was washed away and that Piney Point had quite a bit of water especially in the museum. She was also saying how Annapolis was pretty bad as well. There the parking meters were almost all underwater. She couldn't believe the difference a week made as she had gone on the Maryland Challenge with me and had seen these lights in better condition.

Thanks for the pictures. We are not hearing anything down here about the damage done further north with the storm surge: Baltimore Inner Harbor and Fells Point, nor about Concord Point, Piney Point, Annapolis, etc. Keep us posted, if you can.

Larry, thanks for the photos. Isabel sure did wreak havoc on a wide area. As Joyce mentioned, we had not seen much report from futher north.

And yes, what a difference a week as made.

Bad news for Havre de Grace

What exactly DOES flood insurance cover?

Let's hope that the city can convince the insurance company to live up to what it should do. FEMA may also come thru. The boardwalk was such a pretty one that I sure hope it can be reconstructed.

It's amazing! You pay and pay and pay and when it's time to collect, you're not covered. That's a shame. I hope they get that overturned.
