Belle Tout Lighthouse was moved to keep it from falling over the cliff edge and into the sea. The following web site is a good starting point to not only get the details of the move but also about Beachy Head Lighthouse which is located in the water below the Bell Tout lighthouse.
Beachy Head just recently was almost destroyed by the cliff face falling into the sea. This is the same cliff face erosion that threatened Belle Tout. It could have, almost been Belle Tout falling over the side and taking off more of the cliff with it and destroying Beachy Head at the same time.
Belle Tout, the Beachy Head lighthouse and surrounding area has been the scene of several movies and BBC programs.

Quite a story behind this one, Paul. But a possible double tragedy, loss of lighthouse and the cliffs. Seems as though they should be moving it further back than they are.

They are already working on the next move if needed. The cliff is in front of the lighthouse and the hillside slopes severely down on the backside. They will have to build up the hillside in order to move it any further back. I thought I would share this postcard from my collection. It has an August 31, 1905 postmark from Eastborne to London. It isn't mint but I really liked the lighthouse, especially the tower, so I added it to my collection.

Three page article on the move of theBelle Tout Lighthouse in June issue of Lighthouse Digest. Intersting picture of Beachy Head shortly after part of the chalk cliff above it "dropped in".
