Good news for the Tawas Point Lighthouse:

The Michigan D.N.R., who assumed control of the structure late last fall from the U.S.C.G., plans to begin restoration efforts this year. Some of the first projects will be to install a historically accurate metal shingle roof on the lighthouse keepers quarters, remove an asphalt parking lot and pathway leading to the structure, and construction of a new pedistrian and bicycle path. Other plans as funds are available include repainting the tower, restoration inside the keeper's house, burying overhead electrical lines, and improved landscaping.

One controversial aspect of the plan calls for the removal of a large house that was added to the site in 1922. The house served as as residence and headquarters for the Coast Guard until they moved out in 1991. D.N.R. Officials state the house blocks the view of the lighthouse to people approaching the site. Others state that the house has been a part of the site for the last 80 years and should remain.
