My girlfriend brought a local newspaper article to my attention on 4 lighthouses in VA that they tried to give away to non-profit agensies or persons that would keep them up and allow them to be visited. They had no takers apparently (at least none that they wanted to accept) so they are being auctioned off with no stipulations specified except that they will "feel the people out" after the sale to see if they're legit, fit enough, etc. to nandle being owners. There is a bid on all of the lights and two on another. The lights are: Wolf Trap, Newport News Middleground, Thimble Shoals, and Smith Point. Middleground has 2 bids and was going for $6,000 at the time of press and the other 3 have bids of $5,000 each. If anyone is interested in following this, or buying one, go to:

They all must be maintained according to the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Historical convenants are incorporated into the deed. No public utilities. Remains aid to navigation. United States Government reserves an unrestricted right for ingress and egress to maintain, operate, repair, replace or relocate the aid to navigation and any associated equipment, and 360 degree arc of visibility for said aid. When rehabilitation is the appropriate treatment, Grantee shall consult with the State Preservation Officer. MAY have lead-based paint and asbestos. Bid increment $5,000. BY THE WAY did we know that it has a basement? smile

Yeah the paper showed a picture of the "outhouse' on Smith Point and said that later on indoor plumbing and other amenities were introduced, but didn't exist now. Also, no a/c or heat!! eek

I was actually just checking the auctions today. It looks like the $5k bids are the starting bids - this isn't eBay!

Maybe we could all pitch in and buy a Wacko lighthouse....we showed we could do it with Point Sur...if 100 people pitched in $60, we could buy one of them for $6k! Wacko Shoal....Newport News Wacko Ground (sounds cool!)...Wacko Trap (sounds bad)...Wacko Point....

Beyond kiddingness, could we ever buy a lighthouse? Or would we need an actual, "official", group to do so?

That would be COOL! laugh
