The following information is from an AP article running in the 8-7-99 "Bay City Times".

The article states that Michigan has set up a $100,000 program to ensure the quality of Michigan's lighthouses well into the future. Secretary of State Candice Miller says that the "Lighthouse Assistance Program" will award grants of up to $20,000 to be matched by groups interested in preserving these lighthouses. I suppose it doesn't sound like a lot, but it makes a group's $20,000 amount to $40,000.

It also states in the article that the U.S. Coast Guard hopes to transfer "ALL" of its Michigan lighthouses to new owners within ten years. The first seven transfered or due to be transferred are:

Eagle Harbor Light
Forty Mile Point
Sand Point
Seul Choix Pointe
St. Clair Flats South Channel Lights
Tawas Point
Whitefish Point

Let us hope that no more lighthouses will be lost to the elements, vandals, or neglect, and that these funds will spark more groups to step forward and take the necessary action to protect Michigan's lighthouses
