Sand Island Lighthouse, Alabama, in Mobile Bay is under a restoration project. A few concerned citizens have taken it upon themselves to take on the project. It would be nice if HL could make a lighthouse in honor of this historic Civil War lighthouse. (Maybe a "then & now" version).

I agree that it would be a great addition to the HL line. The tower is in a precarious position, much like Morris Island. Sand Island is 132 feet tall. There was a tower built before the Civil War that was reported to be 150 feet tall. It was built by Winslow Lewis. Later during the Civil War he ordered the tower blown up to keep the $!@# yankees from using it for navigation. One hundred and sixty one lighthouses were destroyed along the Gulf coast during the war. Wouldn't this make a facinating new line for Harbour Lights?

You can read more about efforts to save Sand Island at www.zebra.net/~wlee/lighthouse/

I agree. It would make a great Then and Now and help publicize the real light's restoration needs.

Thanks for the pictures. I had been to Daulphin Island as a kid, but I didn't get to see the light. May give me a reason to go back there. It would make a great then/now piece.

Since I received my first Harbour Lights which just happened to be Middle Bay. I have wished every time for Sand Island, AL. Am glad to finally have some back up. Maybe my wish will come true.
