Avery Point Lighthouse in Groton, CT

I wish you could have been there last Sunday when the plywood, that was covering the enrtyway into this small but unique lighthouse, was removed and we got a look inside.

View the pictures via the following link:

This lighthouse has been dark and neglected since 1967, when the U. S. Coast Guard vacated the site and it was turned over to the state of Connecticut. The University of Connecticut now has a campus here and interest in saving this jewel is growing.

Visit the Avery Point Lighthouse Society website at:
http://apls.tripod.com

The lighthouse was originally built as a memorial to lighthouse keepers everywhere. It would be a fitting tribute if Harbour Lights were to replicate this lighthouse and donate some of the profit from each sale to the restoration efforts.

You can make a difference, but first visit the website and photo albums to learn more about the lighthouse and the people who are trying to save her. Thanks for caring.

I guess I went on the wrong Sunday.

I was just there this past Saturday 11-04. I put a post about my trip in the Map Room.
http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/Forum15/HTML/000227.html

I commented on the condition of Avery Point. I wish I could have seen the inside. i visited the website and looked at your pictures. Lots of pictures, and information.

I'll have to consider adding this one to my list of causes. My wife is afraid of visiting lighthouses as i join way too many societies, associations, friends of, etc. I counter with it's a good cause.

I second the idea of a Harbour Lights replica of Avery Point with a similar action to what HL did with Rockland Breakwater.

Dennis

This is a fine organization and a good cause!
If you know Ron Foster, you would know it would have to be that way. Avery Point is a unique light with a commendable heritage, and would make a good addition to the HL line.

Artist Rich Terpe with his painting of Avery Point Lighthouse (in front of the real light).

I thought that you would all like see the painting which artist Rich Terpe presented in September to the Avery Point Lighthouse Society (APLS). A copy of this painting may be available soon in postcard form (proceeds to benefit the restoration effort). I will let you all know when they are available.

Thank you Dennis & Bob for your support.

The sun reflecting in the Avery Point Lighthouse Model (made by Don Perkins) in front of the real Avery Point Lighthouse in Groton, CT.

This is one of over a dozen pictures which I have posted in a special photo album of the Avery Point Lighthouse along with the model of it. The model was made by Don Perkins and donated recently to the Avery Point Lighthouse Society to help with raising funds for the lighthouse restoration. Very nice photos, Ron!

All that's missing from the album is a shot of Paul holding the HL model in front of the real light!

I like your train of thought mombo. I hope this happens as the lighthouse is in desperate need of restoration & funds. If Harbour Lights were able to help by making a replica that would be the icing on the cake.

Great pics, Ron! I've never visited Avery Point Light but maybe I'll get down that way sometime this Winter if I can get my life to slow down just a wee bit. Life has been too busy in 2000.

GREAT photos Ron. Being a Connecticut girl I also hope HL will help out Avery Point. Maybe we can campaign for Avery to be the 2002 WACKO Pin??? Thanks again for the great pics.
