How many of you fine collectors
out there can't stop? I mean
really can't stop. Like gotta
have the new one, gotta get
a lower number, Canadian w/rod
(yes), green water, 1st mold,
mismarked, misspelled and the list
goes on. I'll bet there's a lot
out there that have spouses that
say enough, where does this all
end? Has the house or car payment
been delayed because of a new
piece? Have you put off a vacation
because of that Coquille River?
Do you have so many of these
little buggers that you have
resorted to putting them in
unusual places? Has breaking one
of them caused you not to have
sex with your partner for several
days? Has your insurance gone up
to cover replacement if one ever
breaks? Have you yelled at your
kids for touching them? Have you
ever thought of giving up your
beloved pet for breaking one?
Does eBay drive you crazy,
wondering if your going to win
that piece or not? Have you ever
wanted to stab that person who
won that piece away from you?
(eBay rage) What does that charge
card look like? Are you fond of
sea green styrofoam peanuts?
Have you thought about putting
a curio cabinet in your kids
room?
If you answered yes to any
of these questions, I believe
you, (and I), have something
undiscovered yet by medical
science. I will call it
Harbourlitis, which is a condition
of not knowing when to stop.
Bill will eventually have to pay
damages, like the cigarette
companies had to.
My wish is, if they have group
therapy for alcholics, gamblers,
sex offender etc., why not have
one for us?
I started collecting in '91', and
thankfully have bought most of
my lighthouses when they were
between $50 and $60, but I have
bought Coquille and Split Rock MI
on the secondary with the original
price sticker still affixed to
the bottom. The price stickers
on both pieces said $59.95.(ouch)
Well, Bill will keep makin em,
and we'll keep buying em. And if
it makes us happy, I'm certain
it makes Bill happy, although
I will have to sell my first born grandchild to get the original Hatteras.
How about your views on this
Mr. Younger, we would really like
to hear from you on one of these
forums. Do you collect your
lighthouses and do you sign your
own pieces?
Thanks for the fun!

Brian

Don't stop collecting, but please stop hitting the carriage return in the 'Reply' box. Just type and your words will wrap automatically. Much easier to read. Thanks!

Brian,

We must come from the same family.

I'm was thinking of having myself committed to the Betty Ford Clinic, but they said I couldn't bring my lights with me. As far as my wife, everytime she hears me on the computer, she runs downstairs to see who I'm talking to. If you think that's bad, I sit around wondering about ways to keep the boxes from ruining due to too much humidity. My latest craze is selling off my coin collection to purchase the ever elusive Ocracoke, the HOLY GRAIL of lights. I think maybe it's time to seek legal action against Bob for stress related illnesses brought on by low quantities and high demand. Good luck to you and good luck getting that light off you back!

Brian,

What's the most unusual place where you're displaying a lighthouse? (Just wanted to compare and see how bad I have Harbourlitis.)

LOL, Now that's something to ponder! DOES Bill Younger sign his own lighthouses? Enquiring minds want to know!

No, Bob used to sign all of Bill's lights. Don't know who is now.

Bathroom is loaded with em! Top of
refrigerator too. Lots of em in boxes in basement where they really can be appreciated. Any suggestions?

Bathroom is a great place for them. Shower steam keeps them clean. Top of fridge is a good, clean place, too. Low maintenance, high availability.

With tongue VERY firmly in cheek

Not stupid you know, the ones in these spots have minor defects like
a Charlotte Genesee with chip in base or the ones that I consider very unappealing but bought them anyway.

A very low I.Q.'d whizkid!

Personally, I shove my books way back in the bookcase and put the smaller HL's in front of them. But I'm starting to look for display alternatives. Maybe I'll create a new theme for my bathroom, complete with a surf soundtrack.

Back to the THREAD NAME "Harbour Lights Anonymous" or HLA.

At the 1997 reunion, it was my honor to present Bill with a hand painted necktie showing Point Arena. This was donated by a group of the on-line collectors at AOL.

I opened my presentation "Welcome to the first meeting of H-L-A, Harbour Lights Anonymous. My name is John and I'm addicted to Harbour Lights."

Guess you had to be there.

Whizkid3 - I don't think you're stupid. I thought you were being facetious.

Sorry, my mistake! No put-down intended whatsoever.

Donna,

How about all around the bath tub. I mean...think of it! If you have a jacuzzi(sp?), you've got waves, yeah, that's the ticket... Got any toy boats, (say that ten times real fast). Then bring in some rocks from outside...build a alittle jetty and you're set. Then you could turn out the lights... grab aflashlight... a pretend your Thomas Point.. Hold on, the nurse says it's time for my medicine....

Sorry for the childish misinterpretation of your meaning, but I do have 3 questions for everyone!
1. If Harbour Lights were called Bill's Lights from day one, do you think they would have taken off the way they did?
2. If Harbour Lights put out a LE set of Beanie Baby Lighthouse Keepers, would we buy them?
3. If Bill sold out to Anesco, what would be the reaction of the collectors?

Caio,
Brian

(1) I'd buy them anyway.
(2) No way.
(3) Not sure. I'd pause and ask myself if it was time to stop collecting. I'd need to see the results.

1. It's the quality that sells HL, whatever they might be called.
2. I don't think so!!
3. (See #1) - It would depend on the quality.

Guess who, "louie"! You sensed from my first e-mail and purchase from you that I, too, was "hooked" on "these little buggers". If you have to have an "addiction" to something, there is nothing better--they're beautiful--and as the Hatteras bookmarker they give you at Harbour Lights says--"Nothing inspires the imagination like a lighthouse". KEEP THE FLAME!!!! [Try not to overspend--bread and water isn't very appetizing--wallpaper is even worse!!]

1. Yes, it's the quality, not the name.

2. No!

3. Maybe, if the quality remained the same.

My answers:
1. To the true lighthouse buff, the name wouldn't make a difference. But from a marketing point of view I think the name Harbour Lights would get off to a quicker start than Bill's Lights. In the end the quality wins out.
2.Please don't think less of me but I collect Beanie Babies too. We have a bunch of kids, I encourage them to collect, one thing lead to another...Oh!I feel so ashamed, but I would buy them, maybe two sets.
3.Depends on the quality. My oldest daughter collects Cherished Teddies and .. I better quit now or you guys will kick me off the forum, not let me buy a pin, and have Andrea take back my Big Bay.
See ya guys,
George

I've been bitten so bad so quickly that I had to get rid of one of my kids so I could have room to display all the LH's that I've bought since May (99). It started with 1 and I now have 25 fullsize and 27 Miniature and Ornament size. Oh, and just so you don't think I am truly insane, it was just a coincidence that my son moved out, but it works out for my LH's. Dennis

I never had any idea of collecting and now I am surrounded. I really don't think I would collect if there was a sell out. One of the side benefits is the family feeling that HL exudes.

As for the Beanies, I can't afford two HL so I buy the bears for my 23 year old. I also bought some for the twins that I have been holding for future sell. Hope they do stop making them so I can sell the ones I have at a profit. Not so HL's. My children and grandchildren will inherit them.

I guess it's time I answered my own question.
1. Harbour Lights is definitely a classic name for a product so profound, where Bill's Lights on a Lighthouse Legacy magazine cover or on the bottom of the piece doesn't seem to cut it. What catches our eye at the grocery store is the bright box and catchy name, plus what's inside.
2. Someone said that Beanie Babies would be used for attic insulation in the next year or two. I'm inclined to agree with that statement, but to each his own. I have had friends that yawn when I start talking about my collection. You can't please everyone.
3. I also collect David Winters and Lilliput Lane. These pieces were worth more than my quite extensive collection of Bill's Lights. Lilliput Lane out shines them all as far as detail goes (don't kick me off the forum for that statement), but all you need to do is look at one of the older pieces that were made in England, and you'll know what I'm talking about. Well, Anesco bought these companies out and I might as well have plastered my walls with the crushed remains of my once valuable collection.
If Mr. Younger ever sells out to Anesco, I for one, will dump everyone of my lighthouses on eBay as fast as I can. Don't get me wrong, I love my lighthouses, but I won't take a jolt to the wallet like that again.

Caio,
Brian
