The idea of LI lights as a series has been brought up most recently by Mike Seewald.
Well now there is a new reference to see to help educate and view these gems.
While lighthousing in Cedar Island Saturday, I discovered a new calendar for 2000 -"Lighthouses of Long Island" by Ralph Pugliese Jr. for $9.95. Great pictures and it has a wire spiral binding.

I might have to go pick one up next month on my trip. I hope that a Long Island HL's series does come to fruition. There is so much history involved with all of those Lighthouses.

As Bob mentioned the calender is very good with a superb photo of Execution Rock (which is the reason I bought it).

We Long Islanders are very proud of our lights and we hope all of you in the forum get the chance to come up and visit.

I'm going to have to buy one of those calendars when I'm up there next month. I'm looking forward to taking the boat tour to see Execution Rock and Sands Point.

Which boat tour are you referring to? The only one I know of, at this point, is the Lighthouse Safaris tour that goes on the paddlewheeler Thomas Jefferson. The Thomas Jefferson does cruises of its own, but I'm told it doesn't go toward the lighthouses. If there's another tour out that way, I'd love to hear about it.

I hope HL does decide to do a Long Island series. If they do, I hope they know where to go for historical info. :-)

Of course, the question of what defines a Long Island light arises. Going clockwise from the north shore, there's: Stepping Stones, Sands Pt, Execution Rock, The extinct Cold Spring Harbor, the extinct Lloyd's Harbor, Huntington Harbor, Eaton's Neck, Old Field, the extinct Port Jefferson Harbor Breakwater, Horton Pt, Long Beach Bar, the extinct Gardiner's Island, Orient Pt, Plum Island, Little Gull Island, Race Rock, North Dumpling, Montauk Pt, Cedar Island, the extinct Shinnecock, Fire Island and Coney Island.

How about the Fire Island lightship? That would be an interesting addition.

Or the Stratford Shoal light, which is technically in CT? It has been listed at times as a NY light in gov't documents and is about halfway between NY and CT (hence the name Missleground).

Or the Block Island lights, which are technically in RI? I don't know the geology of Block Island, but it sure looks like it could have been connected to Long Island in the geologically recent past. And if you plot the lights on a map or nautical chart, it bacxomes apparent that these lights are certainly part of the same "system" as the LI lights.

It's tough to know where to draw the line. To be honest, I'm still not sure exactly which lights I'll be including in the book. I expect, though, that most would choose to rely on political boundaries and choose not to include the RI and CT lights.

Regardless of the inclusion criteria, I would welcome a Long Island series with open arms.

Let me know what you find out about the Thomas Jefferson cruise.

There are two more Lighthouse Safaris tours that go on that ship on September 18 and October 23 (I'll be a tour guide on the September one and maybe the October one, too). The tours will also visit the Fire Island light, the exhibit at The Museums at Stony Brook and includes lunch and deluxe motorcoach transportation. The price is $75. Sorry to sound like an advertisement, but I know Gayle and her motivation for doing these tours. She's a lifelong educator who couldn't stand retirement, so she's moved her classroom outside.

I had the pleasure of joining the Chesapeake Lighthouse Society one evening of their 4-Day Long Island Lighthouse Trip. I enjoyed their company. Lighthouse people are always warm and friendly. 'Wildbird' was also part of 2 days of this trip, and took a survey of the 58 members of the tour about their favorite Long Island lighthouses. Race Rock and 'Bug Light' Long Beach Bar were their two favorites.
In talking to many of the members, they also expressed an interest in a caisson light Orient Point.
The tour was run by Gayle Haines of Long Island Safaris who will be rerunning the trip in the spring of 2000.

I was surveying the group for a possible club trip, and after 3 days they all told me they were having a great trip, seeing 16+ lighthouses!

You forgot to mention how they raved about their tall, good-looking, humorous, informative tour guide. ;-)

But seriously...

They were a good group. Fun folks. It's too bad we hade some bad weather on Sunday. On Saturday, Race Rock was the last light we visited. It was getting near sundown when we got there. A few folks asked why then light wasn't on. "I guess it's not dark enough" was the only reply I had. As the boat was circling the light, I suddenly heard a commotion on the other side of the boat. The light had come on, and folks were applauding. On the way back - it was a very dark night - we got to see several lights doing their thing. In addition to Race Rock, we saw the lights of Little Gull Island, Orient Point, and the Bug Light. We also saw flashes in the distance from the Montauk Point light.

As a former Long Islander, I'd love to see HL make BOTH Race Light and the Bug Light.

Please do Race Rock first...it's one of my favorites. The Bug Light is a super light also. Made a few trips out there the summer before last in my Zodiac. It was so nice to see a light in such great shape.

How about Eatons Neck?? Let us not forget Long Islands 2nd oldest light.

As of this posting Eatons Neck is dark and undergoing some reconstruction and repair. The tower is surrounded by scaffolding and the lantern room is wrapped. They are re-doing some brickwork and repainting the lantern room.

Hey Bob, ... I'm with you on more Long Island Lighthouses. I've got my fingers crossed hoping Race Rock will become a reality soon. I would also love to see Cedar Point and Huntington Harbor as HLs. There is no doubt in my mind that a series size of 6500 or less would sell out in under two years.
