All this talk about the millennium brings to mind an idea I had some time ago. There are several lighthouses on the Panama Canal. I previously found a website that showed them but unfortunately I can't locate it again. Some of them looked very interesting and as 12-31-99 is the end of U.S. control over the Canal Zone I'm thinking it would be neat if HL could make one of them. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Here is the February Lighthouse Digest article on Panama Canal Lighthouses.

Thanks for the link, Lightkeeper.

Mombo, HL better hurry and get these to market. Lotsa folks don't seem very keen on the International Series. However, if HL can bring them to market before 12/31/99...

I think there are some pretty neat looking lights in the bunch. I'm sure that HL would do them justice and that I would be compelled to purchase them. It might make sense to go with a low edition quantity on something like this, though.

-Art [make a low edition quantity, and they will buy]

I would certanly be interested in a set of Panama Canal Lighthouses. I spent over 3 years there in the Air Force within long walking distance to the Miraflores locks. I can't remember many of the lighthouses shown in the article, but with senior moments of increasing frequency ... What was I saying??? Oh, yeah. I can remember some but just overlooked the others as just another navigation aid of the canal. Given that the Pan Canal Corporation (aka the Army Corps of Engineers in disguise) publicized that the canal and Gatun Lake in particular are the best marked of any marine route, lighthouses just blend in with the other scenery. Some of the potential scenes could include a set of locks, mules (french electric tugs) a ship and the lock masters building.

However, if it is true that the international lighthouses don't sell very well, it may not be anything that will happen. Although, anything is possible.

Apparently, someone did! I think that there is a good chance that out there somewhere, there are 4,000 collectors who would concur. I've got my set on order.

But there were nicer looking lights they could have made. IMHO
