[*]Fifth Order Fresnel [*]Three and one-half Order Fresnel (Clam Shell) [*]Third Order Fresnel (Beehive) Are there first order Clamshell lenses? Do your research: www.harbourlights.com/links/lenses.htm Wonder what's next from HL? How many orders and styles could there be? How big could a model of a first order be? Not to scale, that's for sure. But if they make a First Order, should it be bigger anyway? What are your thoughts? John, I would think if they made a First-Order Lens, it would have to be bigger than the rest, but would you need a crane to get it in your curio? (LOL) I would think one about twice the size of the others would work for me! [This message has been edited by Randy Kremer (edited 05-20-2002).]

Just remember, Randy, twice the size... twice the price and twice the space needed to display it..

Umpqua River, OR's red-and-white paneled 1st order jewel would be perfect for their next (and LAST) lens... make it just a bit bigger than the beehive (but not by much) and maybe the outer lens could be on a turntable revolving around the bulb S-L-O-W-L-Y....?

Works for me Paul!
Remember Navesink at $240!!!
Sounds good Rock, maybe just a little bigger than that - remember now, we're talking First-Order!

I like the lens so much that HL could continue to produce them until they have made the entire line from beginning to end. I would even consider buying another curio for them. Whatever they make in this line is fine with me but it sure would be nice to have a first order about twice the size as the 1st three.

First Order ---> Absolutely I would support it! No matter what the size or price. I would buy this and display it proudly. As for size, one thing is given, since we are talking about a 1st Order, it has to be larger than the existing 3rd Order. I would support one that is either twice or three times that of the 3rd Order. As previously mentioned, it would be a very nice touch if it could rotate automactically however this would cause the cost of the piece to go up. As I always say, If you going to do it.. you may as well do it right. An awesome product will be purchased by a dedicated HL collector no matter what the SRP is. Christopher

I may be wrong, but I believe that the lenses produced to date are, like the lighthouse models, not scaled in proportion to each other. The fifth order is very close in size to the third order; I expect there'd be more size differentiation between the real lenses.
So, if I'm right, Y&A chooses to call them third order, fifth order, etc, not because of their relative size, but because they are models of specific lenses that are, in fact, the orders designated.
It stands to reason then, that a first order lens model should be a based on an actual first order lens, but not necessarily be larger than the other models.
Personally, I'd like to see one of each unique style of lens, some of which could or could not be the same order as others.
Would I buy them all? Dunno. I was going to stop with the fifth order and the clamshell. Then Bill Harnsberger's review got to me, (well, the "beehive - good" part anyway)and I went back for the beehive. After lighting it up, I believe it's my favorite.
So, if they build them, we will come, I guess. Especially with the lighting, and possible color variations, and maybe even rotation.

I think I did some calculating on the potential size of a first order lens based on the actual size of the fifth order.
If memory serves, I calculated that a to-scale first order would have to be 18" high.

Well I wouldn't want one so big it couldn't fit into a curio, unless it came with it's own lighthouse, lol!

Just how big would a to-scale hyper-radial Fresnel be?

Gee, could this be the very same lens I first mentioned just about 2 years ago in this thread ?? (Actually, that thread leads to a fall 1999 thread where we had a very interesting discussion on Fresnel lenses.) Here is a pic of the lobby of the USCG ANT School at Yorktown. At the time Heather and I visited (August 99 I believe) the OIC of the school told us the only size lens they did not have was a 3½. First Order beehive and 2nd order bi-valve Dave [This message has been edited by Dave H (edited 06-01-2002).]

That is indeed the exact lens that Harbour Lights modeled for the Fourth Order, Dave!
