I'd never heard of this lighthouse til I saw it on the cover of the latest Lighthouse Depot catalog (Early Holiday 98). Can't find it in Holland's GAL book - anybody know anything more about it? Anyway - it'd make a great HL model. Rgds, __ /im Silly me - got the Web at my fingertips and didn't even check. Here's info from the first reference I found: "It was named after the ship "John" - wrecked in 1787, near the site of the present structure, located in the northern part of the Bay, near the mouth of the Cohansey River. The iron superstructure, a part of the lighthouse exhibit at the 1876 International Centennial Exhibition, in Philadelphia, was brought to the shoal and placed in position - where it became a permanent structure in 1877. The beacon, fully automated in 1973, is today still a working guide to navigation." http://www.lewes-beach.com/lighthouse.html Don't let "Delaware Bay" fool ya - its in Joisey. I almost hate to admit it, but I agree with Tim. Ship John Shoal looks like a prime candidate for an HL limited edition (italics are for you, Timster!) Isn't that a great shot of the light on the cover of the catalog? You can request a copy of the catalog at the link below if you do not already get it: http://www.lhdigest.com Oh, BTW, Thanks for giving Joisey its due here, Tim. If not for New Jersey, there would be no Delaware Bay! (But then, Pennsylvania might be home to some killer 1st order coastal lights, right?) -Art

My thoughts exactly -- when the LH Depot Catalog arrived ---
This would make a GREAT Harbour Lights lighthouse!
Your link Tim showed there are several good candidates there.

Dittos to everyone's comments. Same response as John's when looking at the Lighthouse Depot mag for the first time. With few exceptions, the bright red lights always seem to be good sellers (Assateague, Jupiter, Quoddy, Holland, etc). Southwest Ledge Light in Connecticut off the New Haven coast is an almost identical design, but with a different color scheme.

Concur with the above comments. I thought the same thing when my copy of the LHD catalog arrived the other day - what a knockout light for HL to produce!! For me, it's the intense red color (minus the gull poop!) that really makes this a winner. It's got a distinctive style/shape and would be only the 3rd (I think) cassion light HL would have done. C'mon HL, let's see Ship John Shoal in '99!!

I agree completely with all who are calling for HL to sculpt an LE of Ship John Shoal Light as shown on the LHD catalog. Although I have visited all the Atlantic Coast lights in New Jersey, I realize I have given little attention to the Delaware Bay lights. Sounds like several of us have been remiss also. Thanks LHD for showing us the light. A sculpted piece would be even better.

Stan, I think this one needs the gull poop to be authentic. No one would recognize it otherwise! Maybe HL can pass it off as a Christmas piece with perma-snow???? :-D

I am in agreement with everyone else that this would make a great Harbour Lights sculpture. It doesn't seem like this many people ever agree on one thing, so this MUST be a good one. It may just have WOW list potential.

Todd - maybe you can make up some bumper stickers for us: Agreement Happens!

Anyway - it'd make a great HL model. Right you are Tim: www.harbourlights.com/catalog/2000/hl_ship_john.htm HL says the research shows it's in Delaware. More than one authority places it in New Jersey. We'll see. [This message has been edited by JChidester (edited 12-31-99).]
