New London and Groton, CT known for shipbuilding, shipping and fishing is the site of the fourth lighthouse in colonial America. Many ships have been guided through the waters at the mouth of the Thames River and Long Island Sound by this beacon, including the Coast Guard Barque Eagle, stationed at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, and the Nautilus, world's first nuclear powered submarine built in Groton (and now a National Memorial at the Submarine Base in Groton).
