There are a number of lighthouses that were manned by brave soles that gave thieir lives in the line of duty. The thread on the Alaska lights mentions those lost to a tsunami at Scotch Cap. The assistant to the keeper at Cape Florida that died during an attack by seminole indians, A hurricane in 1846 that toppled the Sand Key Fl light that killed the lady keeper and her five children. I'm sure you all can come up with many more.

I think it would be great if Harbour Lights would honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep the flame burning. I'm sure their families would appreciate the recognition for the sacrifice they paid to keep mariners safe.

HL, I hope your listening. This is a great idea. Whale Rock in Narragansett Bay, RI would also be a great candidate, Keeper and light disappeared without a trace during the hurricane of 1938. I'm sure there are many more that would qualify as well. Keep you going for years to come. Come on people, let's get a nice long list going for HL to see,

It would be especially nice if we could learn more about the men and women that made that ultimate sacrifice. Maybe Harbour lights could put a Memorial card with a bio of each of these heros in with each Memorial light they do.

What do you think of this idea?.....the Memorial would consist of an 8-sided Lantern room (open w/either no glass or glass on the sides and rear) and a sculpture depicting a man, woman, & child inside. The lantern room would sit on legs that would be secured to a wooden base. There "could" be a light inside...either top or base mounted so that the sculpture could be eluminated. I guess whatever's designed, it should have universal appeal. I can see this thing with a finished height of about 10"-12" and a diameter of around 5"-6" and a cost of around $115-$130. What da ya think....?
(btw....the sculpture inside would show the 3 attached figures as if they are in a "storm"....either full figured or upper torso only)

That's an interesting idea Brent! Covers the desire to see a Fersnel lens and a memorial all in one piece.

I was thinking more along the lines of making a Minot's Ledge HL (or what ever other lights that would fit this catagory) with a second flag saying "in honorable memory of _____ who made the ultimaate sacrifice while keeping the flame" and the name of the keeps assistants that lost their lives. or somthing like that.

Great Topic! I like yours and Brents idea. Either would be great.. If HL goes one with all of everyone's ideas, I am going to have to build a bigger house to show all these pieces. Besides needing more money!
