This is the perfect time to release Matagorda Island Lighthouse. Not only are they currently fundraising to restore the light and rebuild the keepers quarters, they are also restoring the entire island to celebrate it's history and wildlife. Anyone who has visited the island knows its beauty and tranquility. It rivals Sanibel Island as some of the best shelling on the Gulf. It's the winter home to the endangered whooping crane and many other coastal birds and Texas wildlife. Those of us who are fortunate enough to live nearby have found it as a wonderful escape from the city that's only a few hours, yet an entire world away. I think this would be a great addition to any Harbour Lights collection and with the local renewed interest in the lighthouse we would probably even introduce some Texas Gulf Coasters to the beauty of Harbour Lights.

I'm with you on this one Becki! Matagorda is a very unique light and would make a great addition to the Harbour Lights Limited Edition Family! I would think/hope this one is in the works! Hopefully in the near future!

I think it would be a great addition. My daughter and I visited the island last March and had a wonderful tour with the Park Rangers. Thank you for the link. I knew there was a restoration plan but hadn't heard anything lately. Terry

Thanks to both of you for the support! I'm glad you enjoyed the link, Terry. There has been some vandalism to the lighthouse since you were there last. Some kids broke the lock off the door to the tower and covered the interior w/ hot pink spray paint drawings. Fortunately, they were caught and since it's considered both state and federal property, they are being prosecuted on both levels. Once they start moving forward w/ the restoration, I'll be rolling up my sleeves and helping out. Chuck (shiulong) and I are trying to organize a HL club for Houston, and once that gets off the ground, the club will hopefully be working on the project as well.
