It's built of red brick with a black lantern. Now privately owned.

What's YOUR opinion?

The tower is reminiscent of the White River piece. I think it would be a beautiful HL sculpture. But then, I think that Poe Reef would be a beautiful HL sculpture, too. Nowadays, Y&A just doesn't know how to do it any other way!

Since there are no prominent trees around this one (atleast not in this photo), maybe the structure itself could be made about the size of SEBI LE or Nauset. I would love that. That's the one strike against White River, imo: the lighthouse itself is just too small.

Yes indeed, Lamar, that is a very interesting looking lighthouse. HL could make neat looking piece of this one. Where did you say it was or didn't you?

Lamar, I like it! Of course HL could do a great piece. I'm partial to lighthouses that are a bit different than just a white tower.

Picture caption says it is Squaw Island. Further looking at the CG site shows asa Michigan. The info says is north of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. First lit 1892.

According to Penrose's book (1996 printing), the light is in danger. Also talks of the craftsmanship of the buildersin all the details they built in. This picture doesn't show it very well, but the windows are arched. Penrose says that building did appear to be structurally sound, and the reason it is in as good condition as it is is due to the distance from the mainland.

Would make a great HL.

I love lighthouses with that kind of detail in their architecture. This would be a great HL. Have you been there Lamar?

No doubt about it.....it would make for a beautiful piece!!!! HL always does a nice job with "detail" and "Squaw Island" is loaded with that!

That's quite a unique tower, Lamar. - no wonder it's privately owned!
Is that an old Coast guard picture you got there? any date on it? the new link has it covered in a forest.

No, I haven't been there yet but I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage the HL Reunion 2001 Committee to THINK MICHIGAN

Yes, that's an old Coast Guard picture, circa 1894 as I recall.

Yes, from what I can tell so far it's surrounded by trees now. I don't yet know what condition it's in of if the owners might allow a lighthouse Wacko to visit by prior arrangement. Sometimes when I call or write way ahead of time the owners are amenable to a visit.

Three of my favorite HL's are SEBI, Sea Girt, South Bass and White River and I think this one would fit really well in the HL lineup.

Gang,

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but I was doing a search on Squaw Island. I agree with everyone that it would make a great HL piece. I've always been so impressed with the architecture of the place, even though I've only seen it in photos.

But here's the kicker. Last time I was 'up north' I was walking through Harbor Springs drooling at the displays in the real estate offices. For the life of me, I can't remember which company I was looking at, but they had SQUAW ISLAND for sale! The WHOLE island - lighthouse and all! I've searched the real estate companies on the Internet and have come up with nothing. Does anyone out there have any idea who was offering it, and if it's still on the market? There's no way I would personally be able to make a purchase like this, but I might start talking to some preservation groups...

If anyone has any clues, let me know!

Kent,
I'm glad to see you bring this back from the past! It's a great looking lighthouse. It's similar to some of the others, but so very unique! It would make a great figurine and I believe Harbour Lights would do it up right! Here are a few more pictures of it!

Squaw Island Light is a bit different. Therefore, I would approve of it as a Harbour Light. Thanks for sharing the link.

I think it would make a great addition to the Harbour lights Collection.

I like this photo too:

http://www.greatlakeslighthouses.com/4200ful.shtml

Couldn't find any info on the web as to the island/lighthouse being for sale. Maybe someone on Beaver Island which is nearby but much larger would know. If it were me and I really wanted to know I'd just call a realtor and ask! smile
