A while back we discussed the idea of a special millennium piece and in another forum that of the reissuing of West Quoddy. Seeing that West Quoddy will be the first lighthouse in the US to greet the first dawn of the new millenium, maybe it would be nice for HL to create a special issue of West Quoddy for this event and perhaps call it "The First Light of the New Millennium" ??

Hey, "Thelightkeeper", I like your idea for the new series, but I agree with Sean, my checkbook, and credit cards can't handle anymore. But love 'em anyway.

Actually, Mike, I think we've already beat this topic to death, lol!

'Course if it were a New York light??????

I've read much of the earlier discussion on this topic, and like Mike's West Quoddy Head idea better than anything else so far. The "first light" concept makes a lot of sense. Besides, any excuse for a new West Quoddy Head will get my support!

Let me cast another vote for West Quoddy being the "Millenium Piece"

As Mike "The Lightkeeper" said it will be the first light seeing the dawn of the next century.

A fitting tribute indeed.

While I'm not sure it's designated as a 'Millennium Piece', it looks like the Statue of Liberty will be available only during the year 2000 -- and there may be some other limitations on the quantity.

My recollections of the various threads on the topic of SofL as a (lighthouse, beacon, aid to navigation, national symbol, et al) lead me to believe that limiting the quantities is a prudent thing to do. As good as HLs is at depicting an historic lighthouse, for me the Statue of Liberty doesn't qualify. So I don't know that I'll be anxious to add it to my collection, even though it is on the east coast.

Rick, I agree with you 100 percent!!! As much as I love HL's there will be no space in my curio for another reproduction of this already over-reproduced symbol. Don't get me wrong. I love the SoL and what it stands for, but let's face it, they're everywhere! Maybe I'm jumping the gun without actually seeing the piece, but at this moment, these are my feelings.

Cheer up guys all this means is the SoL is not the lighthouse representing the new Millennium, since the new Millennium doesn't really start until 2001.

Sorry guys, but I think that these lighthouses will see the dawning of the new millenium long before West Quoddy.

No, I'm not seriously pushing these as possible millenium pieces, just raising awareness of possible Americentric provincialthink on the world wide web. Translation: I had nothing better to do.

Personally, I really liked the idea of the New London Harbor light with the Coast Guard's Eagle sailing by.

Speaking honestly...I'm not that thrilled about having the Statue of Liberty become a Harbour Light piece. No disrespect intended for the history of the SOL and what it means to many people. I find it hard to consider this symbol a lighthouse.

I agree with previous comments. The SOL is many things to many people and all of them good, but one thing it isn't IMHO is a lighthouse in any sense of the word.

I'm not sure that I like the SOL as a lighthouse sculpture with so many other tradition lights not yet in the series. However, there is a provenance for it in that it was included in the original 50 card Hassan Lighthouse Series. Maybe it is a good choice when considering that it does carry a fairly universal recognition factor along with its torch.

If you've got a little time on your hands and want to read what we were saying about the Statue of Liberty as a Millenium piece, way back in the dead of Winter, here's the link: Y2K SoL SMiLE . (Complete with picture of SoL 'minnie' and other wonders.)

JC - what would be neat is if we had an index to topics that would list various threads where the topics were discussed. The continual influx of newbs leads to renewed discussion (a good thing). It also turns out that with all the messages and chit-chat since the forums started, there aren't too many things we haven't yapped about in one form or another. An index with links which could be added to, might be a helpful forum reference.

In the meantime folks you can leave no turd unstoned :-) by using the Search function to find just about anything - though its more work and you have to sometimes be creative with your search strings. 'Search is available in the upper right corner by clicking on - you guessed it - the underlined ' search ' link.

Could the best thing about the SoL piece be whatever inspiration it brings to the Chinese model painters?
