You may remember the 'wordless workshop' from Popular Mechanics magazine:

Well, did I REALLY do this? Yes. This poor Jupiter had the fences broken long ago - when I bought it sight unseen from a going-out-of-business dealer. So I was wondering what might happen if a Harbour Lights met a dishwasher and Cascade. Would ALL the paint come off - leaving a 'white piece'?

What actually happened was SOME of the paint came off - mostly on the shrubbery. I believe this side was 'facing down' in the dishwasher and the strong chemicals in Cascade got concentrated on those shrubs. The scratches on the tower were done by me - about halfway through the cycle, I opened up the dishwasher to see the condition of things. The paint was softened by the hot water and detergent and it was easy to scratch the red paint with my fingernail. Some paint flaked off around the lantern room. The hand-numbering was not harmed.

I do NOT recommend anyone do this - regardless of how dirty your Harbour Lights may be. But I was surprised at how well the washing worked. The piece is definitely cleaner than before - and the paint could be touched up.

The suede-felt remained attached and the label and Malaysia sticker remained also with no signs of damage from the washing.

I don't recommend washing ANY Harbour Lights, but in an extreme case of 'toss-it-or-wash-it', a more gentle hand washing with a less caustic soap such as Ivory flakes might save a piece.

In these 'after' photos, it may appear that the red color changed. It did not - just a function of my cheapie digital camera.

Another line for your RESUME as a Harbour Lights WACKO, Saint John!
Why would you use the detergent?
A true test might have been rise cycle only!
Now whose CRAZY?
Any recorded test results from the Maytag Man? LOL

I'm gonna call the cops.

There are just some areas in which science gets in way over it's head: gene splicing, nuclear reactions, and washing Harbour Lights.

Make the madness stop!

John,

I'm going to call your wife and tell her to keep you away from all household appliances. What's next? The blender, A Jupiter Pina Colada? The washing machine - a Jupiter spin cycle? Maybe the blow dryer -a Jupiter tornado?

It came through the dishwasher much better than I would have expected. Maybe this should be the "Have Jupiter Will Travel" piece. It could be like a Where's Waldo but with the Kitchen Aid Jupiter.

Come on, admit it. You've ALL wanted to do this at one time or another.

Now we have to admit that HL151 came out in 1995 so it represents the second or third generation of paints used by Harbour Lights production sources in Malaysia - perhaps different from the Canadian and Southern California suppliers.

If anyone has a low number Cape Blanco they'd like to donate to science, I'll be happy to run another test and report the results. My suspicion is that PB would not fare as well as Jupiter.

In search of the truth...

Hey John,...I just bought one of those KitchenAid Stand Mixers ("Yuppie counter-top ornament") yesterday. Maybe I should put your Jupiter in the bowl with the dough hook attachment to see how rugged these HLs really are.

Hmmm. Do I see a trophy coming on? Mount that "KitchenAid/Jupiter" up on some walnut and start an annual "World Class Wacko" traveling award to go each year to the craziest Harbour Lights experiment by a Wacko?

John, just because the real lighthouse stripped off its red paint didn't mean the HL had to. Oh by the way, does the HL have the authentic red brick under the red paint?

Hey, that paint still looks better than the paint on some of the original 17!
I had hoped there was a reasonable explanation for John taking leave of his senses!

I *do* admit it, but then, there are a lot of things that I've *wanted* to do. The difference is in acting or not acting.

John, you're clearly in a Wacko class by yourself. I can't hold an Argand lamp to you. You're not just a run-of-the-mill Wacko, you have a certain genius in the field!

What's next, John, using Jupiter as a hood ornament on your '51 DeSoto? :>)

Wasn't there a model glued to the hood of the Selkirk van? It probably could use a good washin'.

Want more fun - take one uh those AOL CDs you get in the mail (or any old CD you don't want anymore) and toast it in the microwave for 30 seconds. heh heh heh

By the way you may want to be vewy vewy kwiet about this in case the thread gets monitored by the SPCHL.

John's right, they are pretty durable. Heck, Tim and I used Navasink as a jack stand after the brakes went out while Tim was running moonshine .... er uh Fuel, late one night and drove off in a corn field. Fortunatly we were able to pick about 60 bushels of corn while the wrecker was winching out the Yugo
