I have several HLs that I bought at a scratch and dent sale at a good price. Most of them have the tip broken off. I want to "repair" them and display them in situations where they can be handled by non HL wachos. My problem is that I'm not sure what kind of glue to use. Does anyone have experience gluing pieces back on a HL? Is one kind of glue preferred over another?

How about one of those glue sticks?

I used Super Glue to put a tree back in place a while back. With a 'ventilator ball', it'll be tricky not putting on too much so it doesn't ooze out around the break.

Wondering what you mean by 'handled by non-HL Wackos'? You were thinking of letting the kids play with them?

I broke the ventilator ball off one of mine and used the glue that I.O. uses on his model ships. It's called "Insta-Cure" and the label says it's cyanoacrylate. He got it in the hobby shop. Am sure most of them carry it or some such product.

Later the same day I proceeded to knock the ventilator ball again when replacing it but it didn't come off. We have also used this glue for other projects around the house. You only need a titch. Think I put a drop on a toothpick and then applied it - no ooze!

"non-HL wackos" are people who are not collectors but ooh and ahh over a lighthouse when I show one to them. I have several on a bookcase at work. When someone comments on them, I usually let them pick up the HLs and look at the details or look for seahorses. This lets me be gracious while the pristine copies are kept behind glass in a locked cabinet. I also get to enjoy the lighthouses while slaveing away to earn the lucre to buy more. I have never had anyone yet who didn't like them. In fact a couple have asked about starting a collection of their own.

Cyanoacrylate is the generic name for Super Glue, Crazy Glue, and a host of similar products. It is available in a variety of viscosities for various applications. I've not used it on any HL except to reattach a loose lightning rod. It worked fine for that.

Superglue, chemical name cyanoacrylate, works well if used sparingly. The vapors cause a capilary action that can cause a white like dust to form around the joint if too much is used. Also there is a PVC based glue brand name WELDBOND that looks like Elmars but much stronger and dries clear. Weldbond is good for trees and the like while superglue is good for VVB,s and the smaller details.
On the subject of superglue again ... the slow drying gel like form tends not to leave the white dust like powder resedue around the joint being bonded.

"Non-Harbour Lights Wacko"????????? Definition - one who has never thought of posting in these forums, at least fifty times. Or maybe it's someone who has posted to some other site (other than HL's forums) 50 times or more???

I was advised by a restoration company to use Tacky Glue VERY sparingly to replace a small fence that came off the porch on my Hillsboro.
