I joined the Coast Guard in April 1967 and stayed until June 1985 when I retired with 23 years. The 23 years included 4 1/2 years Navy time and 5 months inactive duty between the Navy and Coast Guard.

Well aware of Ashtabula since I was raised in Girard, PA which is about 25 miles from there.

its amazing that i still remember these numbers. was assigned to be the clerk and main watch person during the day, listening for the LAVERS boats to call us and Conneact (sp) when they arrived and departed the ports.

afternoon:
was there at the turn of 70'. family out on cape cod during the summer. Had the duty driver take me to Kennedy, took the 7:45 to Hyannis for 18.00 military standby. Arrived at 8:30 and hit the rotary hitchhiking in uniform. Got dropped of in West Harwich, Plesant steet and walked down to the beach and made my mother cry. Normally a 6 hour drive. Noticed another cape coder that i have not introduced myself too. the one who own the cape coder store. The barracks that you sleeped in built for WW2, were still there when i left in 71. Did a lot of sweep, swab and buff those floors. Since i lived in Minnesota, my job was to plow the runways after the Navy left in 70? used their equipment.
tks for the reply
Harold BM3 retired since 71

Welcome to Forums Harold. Looks like you're not on the Cape any longer? I was a kid in the New Bedford area in the 60's and 70'S when you were in the Coast Guard. Been here in South Dennis since '85.

morning: New Bedford is where i enlisted. two of us from the cape on the buddy system. They had a higher quota than Minnesota. Spent my summers on cape cod working for college like all the other kids. Worked at the Dennisport Mobil as a gas jockey plus other jobs on different years. Always went back to mn before labor day for school. When i started collecting as i got older, went up to Eastham and got to know them. Was sad when she called me and told me they were closing down the shop. Nice people.

Afternoon:
had another thought, is as i tried to remember where your store is. I remember going up to Brewster and checking up there. Do not remember store but thought it was off 6A. What i find hard to believe is why i did not find this site before. I remember my Wednesday nites in a chat room with other collectors which i looked forward to. Talked about the up and coming reunions, etc. Started to run out of room to store/display the lights after a while and only then, started collecting Great Lakes and New England along with the societies and the christmas ones. Still think i am missing one of the christmas one. Gotta find out which one and put a add in that forum. Think it was the last one they made. I like other people only display around 8 along with some lightships, Nantucket and Relief. thats it for a sunday

Won't find a brick-and-mortar if you look for us, we're strictly online. If it's the last Christmas piece you need, that would be Squaw Island. Along with Burnt Island and Sturgeon Point, they're few and far between. If you get Rich's volumes you'll be able to see what it is you need.

I currently have 30 PDF Files that list just about everything you want to know about Harbour Lights and their accessories. Therre are also 4 files dealing with military humor and collectors stories of their time in the military.
They are free for the asking when you send me an email request to flacoastie@embarqmail.com asking to be put on my mailing list.
