Top five that I'd really like to see depends on whether you want ones that I am LIKELY to be able to see, or ones that I can only dream of seeing.

Dream wish list:

1) Phares dans la Tempete that's in La Jument poster (if it is still around)
2) Gibbs (Bermuda)
3) Gay Head
4) Ragged Point (Barbados)
5) Cabo de Sao Vicente (Portugual)

The ones that I've missed seeing or have only seen at a distance will have to go back to:

1) Tybee Island (have tried twice and been foiled by fog
2) Cape Charles (never gotten over there)
3) Cape Canaveral
4) Sand Island
5) Hooper Strait

Oh my. I'm not sure I can accurately answer this question, or my top lights might change the next time one asks!

In no particular order:

1. 14-Mile Point, Michigan
2. Grand Island North Lighthouse from the air, Michigan
3. Split Rock, Minnesota
4. Every light in Alaska
5. Every light in Great Britian/Scotland/Ireland

Oooh...I don't know...I don't have any specific lights that would really be "destination lights" for me. I do, however, have a couple offbeat ones that I've always been intrigued by. They're not the type that you'd go to just to see them, but they're ones that have inspired me from my early years of lighthousing and stood out from the pages of my books and web travels.

1) Doubling Point Range Lights, ME. I just think they're the coolest. Between the odd shape, the isolated location, and the wooded feeling, I have been intrigued by these since I first saw them in F. Ross Holland's "Great American Lighthouses."

2) Bailey's Harbor Range Lights, WI. Another one for the unique list. The unique shapes, I think, are really cool. There's other identical ranges in the area, but there's something about the Bailey's ones I really like.

3) Munising Range Lights, MI. Think I have a penchant for quirky range lights? I think it's just so cool how the rear light here is shorter, but up on the hill, tucked into the woods.

4) Crisp Point, MI. A normal light! The road out to here seems to be one of those ones that expedition-y, explorer-y geeks like me dig. I get the same feeling from the far north of Canada. I've developed this feeling towards isolated roads through the adventures of the Land Rover community, and the drive out here sounds like one of those roads that we dream of...isolated, rough, and peaceful.

5) Anything in Canada. I get the same feeling with Canadian lights, and not just one region (though it's especially strong with Atlantic Canada). Even though it's not like the country's the boondocks (okay, yeah, it kind of is once you get past the 50km zone from the US border where something like 95% of Canadians live), there's something I've gotten from the photos and trip journals I've read of the area that makes me want to go there.

I guess a lot of my choices are based on feelings that I get...not even especially from the light, but from the journey. I want to visit plain lights like Munising for the feeling that I've gotten from photos. Canadian Lights and Crisp Point for the journey - a true "Getting there is half the fun" moment. Ones like Doubling Point and Bailey's Harbor for the quirky aspect.

As I said, these aren't really "destination" lights - I wouldn't go all the way to the Great Lakes to visit those three lights, or to Maine to just visit Doubling Point Range. (Canada's a different story, I guess). They may be, and very well could be, letdowns to me. But it's something about the photos I saw of these lights that has exacted a pull on me from that very first moment.

There's other places I'd love to visit...the Pacific coast...the Deep South (though it's obviously very different from how I planned it to be post-Katrina)...of course, the UK and other European lights...good thing I'm 16 and have plenty of time to see these...

Okay. I can now officially be declared the Dork of the group (though Bob Ott already knew that). laugh

Too many to list only 5. Maybe after I visit many along the Jersey, Delmarva, and New York coasts. I could then put a list together for other areas's of the USA.

Now I just need to take some time off to start seeing them.

It's difficult to say what are my top five lighthouses that I want to see. I always want to visit a previously unseen lighthouse.

Top five areas would be:
Southern California
Florida Keys
Gulf of Mexico (I haven't seen a single Gulf Coast lighthouse)
Return to Maine to see all the lights that were lost in the fog.
Boston Harbor.

I don't have specific lighthouses, but these five trips/events would be a start:

1- NJ Lighthouse Challange
2- Delaware Bay cruise
3- Maryland Lighthouse Challange
4- Trip to Cape Cod
5- LI Lighthouse Challange

a close 6th would be a trip up to Maine.

My 2006 list:

1) Doubling Point Range Lights, ME.
2) Bailey's Harbor Range Lights, WI.
3) Munising Range Lights, MI.
4) Crisp Point, MI.
5) Anything in Canada.

So far, accomplished 1 and 5. My priorities have changed a bit though in the past three years.

My new list is based on regions and experiences:

1) Monomoy, MA. Really want to do that trip out there. Maybe with a revisit to the Cape lights included.

2) Return to the Chesapeake. I'll start this with a cruise with Chesapeake Lights to the southern Bay weekend after next, but there's a lot left.

3) Prince Edward Island. Seems like a great collection of lighthouses in a small area.

4) Lake Champlain. I have a feeling this one is getting close, I had a dream that I was visiting Windmill Point/Isle La Motte last night. It's inspiring, that's for sure. This may be a weekend trip this fall.

5) Canadian Great Lakes lights. I've seen plenty on the American side, but I'd love to see some of the Canadian ones. Thinking this might be Spring Break next year - a loop of Lakes Ontario and Erie...

Outer Banks
Cape Henry
Fire Island
Dry Tortugas/Ft. Jefferson
Cape Canaveral up close.

Someone mentioned Bloody Point. The house is still there, but the room that used to have the light is now a bathroom.

I would like to go back and get better photos of these lighthouses:

St. Simons
Amelia Island
St. Johns River
St. Augustine
Morris Island

This space for rent. Inquire within.

My five Lighthouses would be areas instead of particular lights:

1. Maine - haven't been to the state.
2. Outer Banks and other lighthouses in North and South Carolina. Again, have not been to either state.
3. Hawaiian lighthouses. Have been there twice, but I wasn't interested in lighthouses either time. Lighthouse collection for me has only happened in the last 10 years.
4. Florida Keys
5. Alaskan lighthouses.

Tybee, while doing the outer banks lighthouses and Cape Henry you might also do Old Point Comfort in Hampton, Va. It is located on Fort Monroe and is easily accessible. There is also a nice museam located in the fort that covers the war between the states. Jefferson Davis was a prisoner.

I hope that you have a Land Rover as you will need it. Trust me....Driving it in a Saturn SL1 is no picnic. LOL :p My poor car deserves a medal for making it through all of the potholes, ditches, rocks, tree limbs, and mud.

Here is my list (in no particular order):

1. 14 Mile Point
2. Block Island Southeast
3. Cape Henry
4. Cape Hatteras
5. Jupiter Inlet

It is truly odd that a lighthouse enthusiast such as myself would live in one of the only 3 states east of the Mississippi that does not have a lighthouse. Go figure. :p

That's such good news, Bob. Last summer it was in Lighthouse Directory that it had been removed to an unkown location. Maybe it was just for repair and cleaning.

4. West Quoddy Head
3. Bald Head
2. Dungeness
1. Split Rock

Yep, even I am surprised that I haven't seen these five. Picked somewhat because there are a number of lights in each of these areas I haven't yet seen.

Gotta check my PowerBall tickets to see if I will be able to go this year or not.

I also have to tweak my list now!

My 2006 list:

1) Doubling Point Range Lights, ME. -- DONE IN MARCH 2009
2) Bailey's Harbor Range Lights, WI.
3) Munising Range Lights, MI.
4) Crisp Point, MI.
5) Anything in Canada. -- DONE IN MARCH 2009.

My 2009 list:

1) Monomoy, MA.
2) Return to the Chesapeake. -- DONE BETWEEN AUGUST 2009-JULY 2010
3) Prince Edward Island.
4) Lake Champlain. -- DONE SEPTEMBER 2010.
5) Canadian Great Lakes lights.

And now...my 2010 list!

1) Revisit the Seaway Trail. Someplace that was really great to visit in 2004, I need to go back. And this time, I'm circling the Canadian side too. (Mix with #5 from 2009.)

2) Michigan. I need to go to Michigan, more than just St. Joe's. There is so much to see...and I'm already getting the wheels spinning.

3) PEI. Still on the list. I need to get there...I've wanted to for years. It's one of the coolest collections of lights in Canada, IMO.

4) The Pacific Northwest. There's so much to see here...and it's the last region I have to cover. But plans are in the works for June 2011!

5) Florida...I've only seen the Miami area lights. There's so much more to see...from the Keys to the Gulf.

Let's see how much happens by September 2011!

Tough coming up with just 5, but here goes.
Absolutely #1....Statue of Liberty , (don't usually think of this as a lighthouse, but it was an official ATON for a stretch).
#2 Thomas Point Shoals (just something about a screwpile)
#3 The Macquarie Lighthouse (always wanted to visit Australia and this is the oldest lighthouse there).
#4 Diamond Head (who doesn't want to visit Hawaii?)
#5 Cape Hatteras (GOT to see what is perhaps the most iconic lighthouse in America. My legs aren't too happy about this choice, though, just thinking about the climb!) eek
#5 (tie) I just can't leave Split Rock off this list!!!!!

I never had a list posted but I did complete few "bucket list" lighthouses. The end of July, I was able to see all the Oregon lighthouses, Cape Disappointment and North Head, WA, Battery Point and St. George Reef, CA (from a far distance).

The other two that were on my list was finishing out the NJ lighthouses. I was able to see Absecon and Barnegat in August. I also finished out the Hudson River lights by going to Stony Point, NY in August.

Hard to name just five so I lumped the HI lights together as one!
1. The HI lights
2. Thomas Point, MD
3. Sabine Pass, LA
4. Matinicus Rock, ME
5. Crisp Point, MI

Looking forward to 2011 when we will see the HI lights with the USLHS.

I've stayed at New Dungeness three times I think it is now, and am scheduled to stay again in August 2013 with fellow members of Colorado Lighthouse Collectors Society. It really is a wonderful experience! You and your fellow companions are the keepers, so it is a "working vacation". You take care of the tower and the grounds, conduct tours, and perform small maintenance requests. But there is also downtime for you to enjoy the serenity of the station. And as a keeper you get to go out on the gallery anytime you want! One year, we were there during the full moon, really cool viewing from the gallery.
Each time I have gone, I’ve been with a group of folks(six women I use to work with) from Denver which was large enough to fill the house so we did not have people staying that we did not know. We were able meet ahead of time and put together meal plans, shopping lists etc. prior to going which made the food shopping prior to being taken out to the station go more smoothly and efficiently. We divided up the chores and tasks as some folks did not feel comfortable talking to visitors or conducting tours, so they would take care of some of the maintenance tasks (mowing the lawn, painting, picking up trash off the beach, etc.). The house if fully stocked with linens, washer and dryer, pots/pans/dishes, detergent/cleaning supplies, satellite TV, WIFI…you just need to bring your clothes, food, camera and laptop.
The cost of staying there is really a good deal, I think. All keepers must be current members with NDLHS which is like $35 a year for a single person, but they have other rates for like family. The keeper’s fee is like $350 or so for each person for the entire week. Of course you have the cost of food, airline ticket to Seattle, car rental to get to Sequim and maybe the cost of a one night stay at a hotel in Sequim, depending on what the tides schedule are…you can only get to the station during low tide as the NDLHS team drives you out on the beach and there’s only sufficient beach at low tide!

Laura, go to their website New Dungeness Lighthouse and in the left-hand column click on the "Availability" link. There are a few weeks available this year and quite a few available in 2013. Selection for 2014 will begin right after the New Year 2013.

Make lists for shopping ahead of time and review a couple of times before you shop. And shop with the list. That's what we had to do, we don't rely on memory very much anymore nono

If you want to enjoy lots of visitors then go during the summer months. If you would prefer less visitors and don't mind cooler weather then go during spring or early fall. My trips have always been end of September and in October. We were there very close to Halloween one year and brougth some Halloween window clings to decorate. 2013 I will going in August with Bill & Judy, Randall and Linda, and other members of our lighthouse club.

My top 5 are the 5 lighthouses I never got to see while living in Maine for a year. I got 60 under my belt during that time, but these proved much more elusive.

Matinicus Rock Lighthouse.
Little River Lighthouse.
Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse.
Burnt Coat Island Lighthouse, aka Hockamock.
Blue Hill Bay Lighthouse

Wish List: Curtis Island - Camden, Maine. Piedras Blancas "the headless light" - San Simeon, California.
