I have a Nikon D5000 with two lenses 18-55mm and 55-300mm

My problem is that both lenses focus BEYOND infinity. By that I mean in the manual focus setting, you can turn the barrel so that the image goes out of focus after being in focus.

I've sent the 18-55mm to Nikon to repair twice. It arrived back here today with this problem still not fixed. I also checked the 55-300mm lens today and it does the same thing.

"So what?" you may ask. When shooting from a an airplane, everything is at infinity. You should be able to simply turn the manual focus to the farthest rotation and shoot away without waiting for the auto-focus to lock on.

And taking photos of the night stars is difficult under this fault. With the dark sky, the auto focus may never lock on to a star for focus. You can't view the stars well enough through the viewfinder to do a manual focus in the middle of the night.

So please check your DSLR and tell me if in the manual focus mode you can focus beyond infinity. And report on the make and model of the camera and lenses you tested.

Thanks.
