After trying for over an hour to upload a picture of me at my starting weight of 350 pounds taken recently at the Saint Augustine Lighthouse, I finally gave up and asked Dave to do it for me. Now, a computer is a demon as far as I'm concerned, but, not to admit defeat(a COASTIE never admits defeat) I tried one more time and finally must have hit the magic button because there was the picture.

Here's a quick breakdown of what led up to my decision to have the lap band surgery and anyone that wants info on the lap Band weight loss surgery can call me at (352) 622-3239.

I decided after many years of being overweight, since retirement from the Coast Guard in 1985, to have Lap Band Surgery done after watching how sucessful my son's turned out a year ago. Since March 2009 my son has lost 175 lbs. It's funny how things change as you get older. My son is now my mentor and I'm the mentee. I had my surgery on May 13th at 10:30 AM and spent the night in the hospital due to Medicare regulations. The doctor said the operation only took about 1 hr. Thank you to all that kept me and my family in your thoughts and prayers. I really appreciated it. Since I made the decision to have this surgery, I lost 22 lbs on my own as the doctor suggested I do prior to the surgery. This was to help shrink the liver so there is less stress on it as it is moved around during the surgery. I started at 350 lbs the last week of March and weighed in at 328 lbs on May 6th. I wanted to shed at least another 5 lbs before the 13th of May.

I got down to 324 pounds before surgery on the 13th and after I came home and weighed myself I had gained 6 pounds back with all the fluids they pumped in me. I lost that 6 pounds in 3 days before I went back to work. Since going back to work on the 17th of May I have lost another 8 pounds weighing in at 316 this morning. I'm on regular food(ate 3 ribs and 2 bites of cole slaw and I was stuffed today) and the band has yet to be tightened. The band will be tightened on June 16th. I'll keep everyone up to date on my progress periodically. My personal goal is to reach 225 pounds by this time next year at the latest. I would like to reach my goal by Christmas but will be satisfied if it takes a year. Only 91 pounds to go!

350 pounds the middle of March 2010 at St. Augustine Lighthouse

Thought I would give everyone a quick update on my continued weight loss progress. I have now lost a total of 46 pounds from my intial beginning weight of 350 pounds in March 2010. I weighed in at 304 pounds this morning. I lost an additional 8 pounds before the band was tightened the 16 of June and now 4 more pounds since the 16th of June. When I get to 300 pounds I will weigh the same as I did in February 2000 when I bought the suit I can now wear again. My goal is still 225 pounds so only 79 pounds to go. I still hope to average between 12-15 pounds a month and if I'm lucky I will have reached my goal around Christmas.

And the fantastic thing is I'm never hungry. Three ribs and vegetables fills me up the same as 15 ribs, fries and vegetables did before the Lap Band.

Just a quick update on my progress after Lap Band Surgery. I went to the lap band doctor on July 14th and had lost 11 pounds since my last visit on June 16th. Since my doctor's visit on July 14th I have lost an additional 4 pounds weighing in this morning at 292 which brings my total weight loss to 58 pounds. I didn't need an adjustment on my lap band fill as the doctor said a good weight loss each month is 3-4% of your body weight. I go back to the lap band doctor on September 14th. Physically I'm feeling great, but, mentally I still think I should be eating like I use to. Mental thoughts are the hardest to overcome. My blood pressure used to average 160/90 and last week at my semi-annual family doctor appointment it was 120/70. That is the best it's been in over 20 years. Only 67 pounds to go for my goal of 225. I don't think I'll make it by Christmas, but, I'll be close.

Great going Rich smile It's not been quite two months now and you are almost half way to your goal. I agree that the mental part is the most difficult to overcome but with that knowledge you will do it. With the great blood pressure numbers your health is much better already. You are on way to being a slimmer and healthier and I must say happier person.

towel Great news !!! Keep it up (or down if your refering to weight). wink

If it's the mental part thats hard, think of it this way. With a better blood pressure you'll live longer to eat more food. Just has to be in modiration.

Congratulations Rich!
Glad you are doing well. I looked into doing this as well but chickened out. Keep hoping to find the fortitude and inner strength to take on my food demons myself. Need to lose weight because of diabetes. On the plus side, my BP is fine, which I think amazes my doctor a bit.

I will be looking forward to following your progress.

Randall - It's a piece of cake. It was so simple and easy that it was over before I knew it. Forty-five minutes in the operating room and an overnight stay in the hospital(medicare rules). I had it done on a Thursday morning, was home Friday afternoon and back to my desk job on Monday. Hard physical labor is a week before back to work. If you are seriously thinking about it, DO IT!

Just a quick update on my surgery and weight loss progress. It has now been 6 months since my lap-band surgery and I'm now down from 350 lbs. to 267 lbs. in 6 months. I have 42 more pounds to go to reach my 225 lb. goal. I'm hoping to be at 225 lbs. by May-June of 2011. I've lost a total of 83 lbs. and 8 pants sizes and 1 shirt size.

I feel great and my BP now ranges about 130/75 instead of 160/95. I'm still on BP medicine but my doctor is considering stopping 1 or 2 of the 3 that I currently take. I can also bend over and tie my shoes now without straining. Those 14 ribs, french fries, bread and green beans I used to eat when we went out to dinner is now down to 2 ribs and green beans. I also used to drink 2-3 Diet Pepsies everyday and now drink 1 a week. There is no desire for them anymore.

I'll keep everyone posted as my progress continues.

Rich,
I am so Happy for you. Your weight loss is proof of how hard you have been working. Your health improvement is part of the total you are gaining. You have lost in 6 months what it has taken me a year to do.
I am also working to loose weight, and have passed my 1 year mark on 11/11 a total of 86 lbs. I know how hard you are working! The mental part is the roughest. I still reach for food when stressed. 326lbs. to 238lbs. takes a lot of getting used to(for all those around us) and is worth the effort. I am now at 53 the size I was at 27. Keep up the Good Work!!

Thanks for everyone's well wishes. I moving along, and as Roland said, keeping the local economy going in clothes. However, the restaurant and grocery store profits are down. Where I used to eat a pound of steak at one time, I now cut it into 1/3 pund pieces and get 3 meals out of it.

It's a great way to loose weight if you qualify for it. The hardest part is what Nancy said when she mentioned the mental part is way harder then the physical part. No wonder you have to see a shrink before you go through with the operation.

Here's a current picture of me at 267 pounds down from the 350 pounds back in the April/May time frame that I was at in the very first post and picture of this topic.

The doctor said he would tighten my band in January but that he wanted me to enjoy the holidays and eat some of the food that isn't good for me (pecan and apple pies, fruit cake, etc.) and that he didn't expect me to shed weight but he also didn't expect me to gain weight. So far all is well!

The after in red shirt at 267 pounds and the before in white print shirt at 350 pounds.

Just a quick update on my weight loss since having the Lap Band surgery. I'm now at 250 lbs. with a total weight loss of 100 lbs. It's been 18 months and I obviously didn't meet my goal of 225 lbs. by Christmas of last year and won't make it by Christmas of this year either. My weight loss has slowed considerably and as my doctor said "A pound weight loss a month is better than a pound weight gain a month". I'm eating a little more than I was a year ago and cheat every once in a while with some sweets but slowly but surely I'll reach my goal. The doctor also said that 225 lbs may not be the best weight for me and my body knows that, so I may never get there.

John's post on his 9 year anniversary reminded me to update my progress.
