In the latest Lighthouse Digest on the page Keepers Korner, the Virginia Dept. of Motor Vehicles is offering souvenir lighthouse license plates. You can on line personalize your plate and order on line. I ordered one on Saturday. There are three lights on the plate: Cape Henry, Assateague, and I think Old Point Comfort. Check it out, it's pretty cool. I wish other states would do the same. Does anyone else know of other states that do this? The web site is:

How about a little more info. Can a non-resident get one, and how much do they cost?

(YOur hyper link is not active), try editing it after you print out a copy of UBB CODE found in"--ers.com/forums/ubbcode.html " on this site, or just go to FAQS and look for UBB CODE.

I ordered and recieved mine already. the cost is $10 and you can order and pay for it on the web site. If you want ot personalize your plate it is an extra $10.

Go to this website and click on the Souvenir Plate link third from the top of the list on the left side of the page.
https://www.dmv.state.va.us/

Anyone can order them. It comes with little Sample Decals in the upper left and right corners where the decals for the registration year would go. I got a message from somewhere about 2-3 weeks ago about it. There was a list of states that have Lighthouse plates, but I went to the DMV sites for the other states listed and no one else is offering Souvenir plates at this time.

Actually, I'm surprised that any state is doing so. The plate is indistinguishable from any official plate, because it is an official plate. I would think that Law Enforcement authorities would be unlikely to support this practice.

I don't know why i did not post htis here myself. I apologize to all for my oversight.

The plate looks very nice. I'm going to display it on the wall in my lighthouse room. I had the same mesaage just approved by my State Senator for a personalized lighthouse plate in NJ- TSP 8. It stands for the position that I worked in since 1981- Trenton State Prison SB #8. It was a Guard Tower overlooking the Recreational Yard at a prison in NJ. I just retired in July after 27 years there.

Pharologst, yes, non-residents can order a plate. $10 for a blank or $20 for a personalized. Hope this link works!

Try shortening the link to just the following

www.dmv.state.va.us

This should take you to the main page. the other link gets you nowhere directly.

Sure, why not. It's a nice place to visit. My brother lives in Roanoke. I've been there several times. We've also been to the Williamsburg area several times.

I have not gotten to VA on the coastal area since being a lighthouse Wacko, but I plan to soon.

Not a Virginian. But Darn close. I grew up just a few miles south of the Virgina NC line. I will have to look into this.

PS Just for Derith. I'm from Eden originally.

The Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society worked for over three years to get the state of Viginia to produce the LH Plate. In addition, we had to have something like 450 plates "pre-sold" before they ever produced the first one.
I'm glad to see VDOT is selling them as souvenirs and that alot of folks are interested in buying them...they really are neat!!
'Hats-off to the Chapter for their hard work in bringing this project to a successful conclusion.

Brent,

Thanks to you and your organization for getting us the LH lisence plate.

i like it, but i'm still amazaed any state would sell souvenir plates that are exactly the same as the official plates.

Even with that observation I hope all the other states do the same. Just what I need -something else to collect.

Honestly, I don't think that was ever the intent....I'm not sure, but I don't think that the state of Virginia has ever done that before (Re: sold tags as a souvenir)...but, then again, we've never had a lighthouse-tag either....
Apparently, the demand is pretty high.

THANKS TD !! I ordered mine today and it says POWR2L , which is my latest claim to fame as I set up a hardware/tool department at new Home Depot and ran it for a few years.

I just ordered one today. Not very imaginative this morning, just used our last name for personalization. Great idea on Virginia's part.

Actually, TD's original web address does work. The "S" in the http indicates a secure site, and may screw up UBB's ability to automatically make it active (a wild guess). Perhaps you didn't include a space between the ":" and the "http".

Here is a link to the page actually showing the plate -

My original post did not mention that I did buy a plate. Real simple "TD". About six months ago I sent a E:Mail to Split Rock to see if they had any interest in MN having it on a licence. The said the best bet was for the state to include on their quarter. I am going to write to some state officials to see how we can get the most visable site in our state to be on our lincense plates. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this accomplished I'm ready to take on the big boys!

The turnaround on this is amazingly quick considering that you are dealing with a governmental agency.

It takes much longer to get my "real" plates in NJ. I've ordered special LH plates and it will take up to 16 weeks to get them.

I guess it's because the inmates work slow.
They actually are made in a prison in southern NJ. Not to far from a lighthouse (East Point).

Thanks for the plate info. I was born and grew up in Va Beach, so I am looking to get my plate too. Wish NY had a lighthouse plate. Thanks again.

Sheryl, NY does have a lighthouse license plate - Statue of Liberty on most and you can order a Montauk.
