Does anyone know how the Gulf Lighthouses fared when Hurricane Ivan came though?

Thats a great question, Eric. I'm really surprised no one has talked about any of the lighthouses in Florida and what may have happend to them during all those storms. I guess people's priority is with their homes right now.  Bob

Here is a brief excerpt from http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/news/nation/9695222.htm Originally severed from the main island by Hurricane Georges in 1998, the Chandeleur Island Lighthouse now appears even more desolate with the land mass leading to it even more fractured.
By contrast, Round Island's lighthouse, in the Mississippi Sound southeast of Pascagoula, appeared completely undamaged.

We received a note from the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum asking for donations mainly because of the tourist business they have lost over these hurricanes. I'm sure the other Florida lights are in the situation. Hopefully St. George is still standing. It's been on the endangered list for a long time.

Cape St. George is still standing  but the ruins of the chimney of the keepers house and the oil house are gone  from what I was told at the Florida Lighthouse Association meeting. Instead of losing sand it is reported to have gain a bit. Eric

Sand Island Lighthouse and Mobile Middle Bay both did fine during Hurricane Ivan. Middle Bay Light underwent an extensive renovation last year, including a new slate roof and a complete assessment of its screw piles. Sand Island Light appears unscathed though extensive erosion occurred.

I'm curious as to how the recovery effort is going down south. I would imagine some normalcy has been restored. Is there still a lot of obvious destruction? Are people able to return to somewhat of a normal existence?  Bob

Hi Bob,
here in Orlando, life is pretty normal. That said, you can still see a lot of blue tarps on roofs, and still see piles of tree branches and debris that still has not been removed. Charlie took down a ton of trees and the other two hurricanes add a bit more. It may be months until the roofs get repaired as so many people have roof damage. Gas was hard to get until after the last storm, but now the supply is back to normal, however, I think the gas companies took advantage as the price is still high.
