Call it an inventory reduction sale, if you want. Looks more like a going-out-of-business sale. Only things being held back are Harbour Lights from 2010 and 2011.

I guess the dealer agreement we made with HL would now be null and void. $%^%#@#$%

And the value of the inventories of all those licensed Harbour Lights dealers was just devalued significantly through no fault of their own. The devaluation of inventory is NOT 33% -- it's 66%.

Let's take a lighthouse with a SRP of $75 that was introduced in 2009. LHD now offers it at $50 (one-third off).

Dealer X paid $37.50 for this piece in 2009, expecting to eventually make $37.50 in profit when they sold it at the agreed-upon retail price of $75.

Their $37.50 purchase is now worth $12.50, a devaluation of 66% on their 'inventory investment.' For the dealer to make the $37.50 profit they expected, they have to accept that the piece in their inventory is now worth only worth $12.50 if they sell it for $50.

A dealer with $5,000 worth of unsold Harbour Lights now has to think of that investment as worth only $1,650. And this on top of a decline in demand for Harbour Lights -- and all collectibles.

The "Harbour Lights Bubble" has burst.

I feel the need to add that this has nothing to do with Tony Constantino and Harry Hine of Harbour Lights and their hard work and their darndest efforts to keep Harbour Lights going at the very highest quality level possible in today's market. HL Products are as great as they ever have been because of their efforts.

I feel bad for the dealers, as they have become more than just someone that stocks and sells HL's; they have become friends. The state of the economy is causing many retailers to do things to keep their heads above the rising tide.

As David Bowie put it:

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
Mmm, yeah

I agree with this statement 150%!

I don't intend to step on anyone's toes, offend them, or make any kind of personal attack, but I think most of the "corporate decisions", relating to Harbour Lights, are being made by the man that sits in highest chair (and I won't mention names because it is NOT Tony or Harry).

Personally, I think he is going down the wrong path! If I didn't know any better, I would speculate that Harbour Lights will someday be similar to the "Franklin Mint" and other collectible items, meaning no dealers (middle-man) and you can ONLY buy HL replicas from 1 Place!

Maybe Harry and Tony should start their OWN Company! Sometimes I wonder what Bill Younger, Harry, and Tony think about the constant inventory "dumping", deeply discounted sales, and how it effects the current dealers (of the hand full of dealers that are left). But, I am sure we will never know as this is a "touchy" subject for them.

I feel bad for the Dealers.... I really do!

I won't comment on this whole situation as I agree with everything said so far and have voiced this same thinking to Tony on several occasions. I really don't know how much longer I'm going to continue my collecting if this practice continues. I'm loyal to my dealer and wouldn't just drop him without plenty of notice but I feel that after this year's issues and before next year's issues (if there are any) may be my stopping point. I basically have told Tony that the almighty dollar is in control by the head honcho and he doesn't care who he hurts as long as it's not him. He should bow oput gracefully and stop while he still has a reputation and hasn't hurt the Harbour Lights reputation any more than he already has.

I have believed for some time that LHD is on its' way out. Those of you who get their emails - how many do you get?? I seem to get at least one a day, and there have been times I have received two. To me that signals a company desperate for sales working every known angle. Like others, I hope they don't take HL to the grave with them, but the way things are being approached that appears to be the direction it is headed . . . . They are on a direct downhill slide, and they are doing anything they can to raise cash - and that includes selling off whatever is in the warehouse, such as the inventory of HL product. IMNSHO . . .

Maybe HL can become independent from LHD and employee owned with Tony and Harry running it. With some recent practices, HL is probably becoming less expensive to purchase as the months go by.

Dedicated collectors may also have to be ready to step up and help save HL from extinction at some point.

If the listing of state-by-state dealers at HarbourLights.com is up-to-date and accurate, it shows 530 retail outlets of at least one HL product. A few dealers have multiple locations listed so the actual number of dealers is less than 530. Many of the listed dealers only carry Little Lights.

Here's the state-by-state count:

2 Alaska
11 Alabama
3 Arkansas
4 Arizona
18 California
7 Colorado
27 Connecticut
3 Delaware
48 Florida
20 Georgia
1 Hawaii
5 Iowa
1 Idaho
14 Illinois
14 Indiana
3 Kansas
0 Kentucky
1 Louisiana
29 Massachusetts

6 Tennessee

Here's another piece of news from the February Lighthouse Legacy:

Quote:
You read it here first!

In 2011 Harbour Lights will suspend from production 52 replicas from the This Little Light of Mine collection.

There is limited availability of each of these 52 replicas, at this writing none are sold out.

If you want a list of these suspended replicas, write

The total is most probably less than that. I'm aware of at least a couple of thos dealers who are no longer either in business or carrying HL products.

I say it is all "bogus".

Look folks, most of these dealers on that list carry only the LLOM. If you don't believe me, start going down the list and making some calls.....

And as Loon pointed out, some on the list are not even around anymore.

As far as I know (and I could be wrong), I only hear about 5 or 6 "main" HL dealers that carry the Harbour Lights LE online. So, am I to believe that these 6 "moderately-sized" dealers equate to the 530 dealers listed on the HL website. I don't think so.

Just so there isn't any confusion, I am taking about dealers that sell the Limited Editions and the other HL products. There are not too many around and with the way it is going... there will on be 1 place to buy your HL LEs.

Again, I feel for the dealers and I will continue to support them as long as I can (or as long as they continue to carry the HL line).

It really wouldn't bother me in the least if HLs just called it quits after these Spring issues or at the latest by the end of this year. I'm so disgusted with the way the "BIG MAN" at HLs is treating both the collectors and dealers with only regards for himself.

Maybe the cruise that everyone has wanted will be the "Swan Song" for Harbour Lights.

Dave,

I just got an e-mail with an offer of a Lifetime Subscription to the Lighthouse Digest Magazine.

It's a veritble bargain at $500. I certainly hope nobody is stupid enough to send in $500 - although if some don't the magazine may go away as well.

They have already opted to go to a bi-monthly publication schedule- albiet with double the pages but even that makes you wonder about it's health as well.

Let's face it - the glory days for LD, Lighthouse Digest and Harbour lights are all in the past. Life goes on and the cycle completes itself.

I can't speak for other states, but most NJ HL dealers carry Limited Editions, only about half of those carry LLOM's anymore.

I say there's still alot of life let in Harbour Lights collecting with the right marketing, planning, and owner.

I couldn't resist in not responding to this quote. Loon may have something here with his comment. We all love lighthouses and why shouldn't people not love lighthouses in the future?

I am not sure sure about the "alot of life" as the Harbour Lights line has been around for 20 years as a collectible and the collectible days are "almost" dried up, but Hey, trying to stay positive, I know I would continue purchasing them as long as they don't become $100-$150 a piece.

It is my own personal opinion, but I believe the "key" is the planning and the owner part. I think Tony is doing as best as he can (or should I say, he is allowed) regarding the marketing part. It's the other two components that need some addressing.

A lot of companies in our country are "hurting" due to the economy, but I don't think continual discounting of HL and "stiffing" dealers (besides LHD)is the solution.

If, and I say "If", LHD folds and Harbour Lights are only sold through 1 source (i.e. HL and/or Lighthouse Marketing), meaning no dealers, I will be extremely UNHAPPY if I have to pay shipping prices that are exorbitant (similar to the common shipping practice of Lighthouse Depot). I know shipping is expensive, but c'mon folks...this is ridiculous.

Hers's a marketing and planning strategy for LHD.... leave the SRP of a HL piece alone (no sales or markdowns) and adjust your shipping price table!

And let's not forget that HL dealer's aren't the only ones taking a beating with LD selling HL at 25%, 33%, or even up to around 50% off. How long will serious HL COLLECTORS continue to buy and add to their HL collections at retail and then see the current value of what they bought drop to 50% or less of what they paid.

This discounting by the very people who desire to sell to HL collectors at retail is a real wake up call to collectors as to why continue throwing their valuable money away.

And of course, we still have HL supplying new inventory to "dealers" who turn it around with impunity at a retail discount and sell it on eBay.

Aren't we at that point where collectors are so disgusted with these practices that they will stop buying and accepting their HL collection devaluations, if many haven't stopped already??

I will be sad if HL actually goes belly up, or the way of Franklin Mint (it irritated me no end that I could not buy Shinnecock Bay and the others from my dealer)but I have been afraid of this from the first. I have only been collecting Harbour Lights since Nov. of 2009, and I have been buying as quickly as I can ever since. I do not understand why they would want to "fix" something that "ain't broke", or wasn't until now!
