Must have been a really old desk, Digger. And one that previously belonged to an old sea captain, no doubt.

And a really BIG one since there is over 300 of them.

Actually, I had put them in a box that over time has managed to make it's way to the back, forgotten areas of my workspace. Most are shipping related, a few lighthouses, local and misc.. but all are very old starting at 1905 with the newest one postmarked 1964. It was fun looking at all of them again.

I had the big idea of scanning each one and making a digital library of them but that will take some time to accomplish.

You could say "they were buried" on the desk . . .

Ditto! I have been buying old postcards with lighthouses/lightships from various sources (eBay, antique stores, etc.) for a number of years now, but don't think I have never seen the ones posted above with the exception of the Frying Pan one. The lightship cards seem especially hard for me to find.

Here's a few more I dug up that I thought were pretty cool. All were postmarked, Lifesaving Crew-1910, Christopher Columbus-1912, Biloxi-1909, New Haven-1908.

Most collectors like pristine cards but I prefer the sent cards which not only dates the card but adds the human story to the event when someone chose the card and shared their experience of travel and adventure with a loved one.

These are 2 of my favorites so far.

The Old Red Cross WWI card is postmarked 1918 and simply says, "I am getting along fine" and signed Billy. With a large "A.E.F. Passed as Censored" stamp over the text. The card was by the Anglo-American Publishing Co.

So far I've scanned 114 cards and I'm about 1/3 of the way through the 1st of 2 boxes. Years ago my mom brought over about a dozen or more of these boxes crammed with old cards and told me to take the ones I wanted. I quickly looked them over and kept some that appealed to me but not near enough time to look at all the boxes. After going through these so far, I wish I would have told her I'd just take them all. Who knows what I missed.

I did find a small photo album in this box that has "most valuable cards" written on it. I looked at them and they don't appear that special to me but then I don't know much about collectible postcards.

This has been a real hoot so far and I can't wait to see what awaits me.
