This is what made this initial announcement confusing to me - 'Coast Guard officials said the decision was made easier because the county had already been doing maintenance on it for the past 15 years."
I had been there 3 times within a year with Derith, and was very involved with the people taking care of this awesome lighthouse and lens. YOU NEVER KNOW THE FULL STORY. Thankfully we have a happy ending.

Not only turn it off, but they were going to remove the lens from the lighthouse, also..

Another article about the Umpqua Lighthouse, Sherri Elliott, who is with the Umpqua Society, says the amount for the operational costs in the story is wrong, the costs are only $3,800 a year..
