I'm thinking of purchasing a wide angle lens. Can anyone tell me what would be best (ie 24mm,etc)?

I guess I independently have the same thing on my mind, Debbie.
I'm interested in anybody's experience with wide angle, fisheye or teleconverters. Brands and sizes would be helpful.
My experience many years ago with a teleconverter was mixed. But now if you put a 2x on a high quality 200 zoom......?????

What kind of camera are you using it on? A 24 mm on many digital's becomes a 36 mm with the 1.5x magnification factor. With a film camera a 24 mm is a very nice wide, but with a digital you might want something like a 15-18 depending on what is available for your camera.

Bob, I have a 2x teleconverter, a Nikon it does a good job. Make sure it will operate all of your lenses function like auto focus and metering if not you'll be fully manual when your using it. And you lose 2 F stops when using a 2x teleconverter, so a F 2.8 lens would then be a F 5.6
I don't use mine as much as I thought I would, But if you decide to buy one go with quality.

Fisheye lens... I love mine and I am using it more than I thought I would.

Thanks Mark for you thoughts. I have a Canon 20d, and now looking to experiment a little. I have a 70-200 2.8 and thinking of those longer shots in an emergecy situation.
I've never seen a name brand teleconverter so now I have something to look for.
I have to remember the 1.5 multiplier. I've read it and been told it many times.

I just looked on http://www.bhphotovideo.com , they have a 2x and a 1.4x made by canon (that should be quality)

Mine is a Minolta film. My father-in-law just gave me his old digital. Have been playing with it a little. If I decide that I like the digital...then will purchase a new one. His is only 4MP. I have been told that because I have been using a 35mm film for so long I need to look for at least 6MP to get the same quality.

Debbie, something to think about with Minolta - since they are no longer making cameras or lenses, eBay is going to probably be your only source for finding something for it. I used to shoot with a Minolta X-370 manual camera and I had a 35-70 and then I wanted wide angle, so I bought a 28mm prime (just 28mm, not a zoom) lens for it. You will get a bit better quality with a prime wide angle, plus it will be a bit cheaper.

Bob, I'm shooting the 70-200/4 white Canon lens. I have Canon's 1.4x converter and I LOVE it. I only lose one stop of light, so it becomes a 5.6 lens, so your 2.8 would become an F4 lens. I have suffered no loss of quality, and it becomes the equivalent of a 448mm with the 1.6x factor. Your lens would be a 5.6 lens with the 2x converter, and though your images would look ok, they will start to suffer a bit of quality loss with the 2x converter. The converter for me was a cheap alternative to not investing to a longer focal length and takes up far less room in the camera bag than a 300mm lens does. I'd be more than happy to post some sample shots if you want to see some. What lenses do you have now for the 20D? My main landscape/lighthouse lens is Canon's 17-40/4 - one of their cheaper "L" lenses, at a whopping $579, but the quality has been nothing next to outstanding. I get the focal length of 27mm for wide angle and if I need to get 40-70mm focal length, I zoom with my feet.

Thanks Jen for your review on the extenders. I'm getting similar feedback from reviews (1.4 vs 2)that I've been I'm researching. I agree with the your reasoning 'size & price' for my decision. 448mm at f4 should do the trick for my 'unexpected out of rangers'.
My 17-85 should more than do the trick for my wide angles, I'll have to experiment more, and move my feet. lol
