Just wanted to alert all you lighthouse/postcard fans of a new book coming out at the end of the month by Bob Muller. New York State Lighthouses by Arcadia Publishing is a collection of late 1800s/early 1900s postcard images of New York's vast lighthouse history. Lighthouses from the Great Lakes to Long Island will be featured. Nearly 200 images are included.

New York State Lighthouses by Bob Muller

Congrats to Robert! Diane, I'm sure you were the book editor as well as the publicist. And don't forget Bob's 1st book on Long Island Lighthouses. Most of us have an autographed copy but some of you newbies may have missed it.

I purchased the book after you posted about it, Bob, but mine isn't an autographed copy. Maybe I can get his autograph on the new book. smile

Bob ~ I worked a bit on this one, but since it is being done by a publishing company (not self-published), they had their own in-house editorial staff. But I did make sure it looked good before he sent the manuscript off. laugh

Grace ~ Bob (Muller) is going to have a limited number of copies available that can be purchased directly from him (if you want his contact info, let me know and I'll pass it along). You can also order them directly from Arcadia's website (which I posted above) or for those in New York, your local Borders/Barnes & Noble will hopefully be carrying copies as well.

This is a much different book than his first, but I think you'll will enjoy it because of the wide variety of stations covered throughout the state (including some lighthouses that no longer exist).

Dennis posted Bob's website but I would like an autographed copy, so please send me the info. If you prefer, you can send it to my email gmoorehewett@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Got to have this one Diane, to go with the first one. Autographed would be great like Bob's other book that I have. Details on ordering directly from Bob would be appreciated. Thanks.

Your best bet is to email Bob directly at NYLighthouses06@aol.com.

I think Nancy (Lighthousetshirts.com) is also going to sell copies (and she lives around the corner, so Bob can pop over and sign those as well) but I haven't heard that definitively yet.

Thanks for your interest! We hope you enjoy the book. Definitely let Bob know what you think of it.

Bob got his advance copy yesterday, and the book looks great. I think folks will be pleased with the old images of the lighthouses.

My check is in the mail- it went out yesterday.

I'm patiently waiting for the boof to return- I'm ready to write the review.

FYI, Bob got his copies of the book on Monday, and I am hoping to mail them out this weekend. So, Grace and Dennis, keep a lookout for them next week. Thanks for your support.

If anyone else is interested in ordering a copy (including an autograph and some other "goodies") check out Bob's website:

New York Lighthouses

We are also in the process of revamping the website. Let us know what you think! laugh

Diane,

I'm still trying to figure out what a boof is.

Seriously, thanks for the update. Unfortunately I won't be around to be on the lookout next week. I'll be leaving on my trip to Europe next Monday evening. I'm sure the book will be here for me when I get back but my review will be a bit late.

Dennis, do you want me to hold off mailing the book until you get back?

Diane,

No need to do that- I have my daughter in charge of things like the mail and newspapers, etc. She lives with us at the moment so it's not a big deal. I'll have two avon boxes of mail when I get back- and Esther will have half an avon box of mail.

I'm a newspaper junkie- I have 3 papers saved for me while I'm away. I like to see what went on while I was gone- and I have to keep up with my comics. laugh

Diane I emailed Bob about the book but didn't hear back. Are you saying that I should just go to his website to order directly from him?

Since the book is published by Arcadia Publishing, I assume it is in the Images of America series. Those are very good books.

I see it on Amazon for under $13. Does Bob make the same no matter where it's sold?

Hello everyone!

Diane said I should come answer some questions...

First, thanks for the interest in the book. I really appreciate it (How stupid would I look if no one bought a copy?).

The book is part of the Postcard History Series, similar to the Images of America Series but it uses historic postcard images. The writer's guidelines are nearly identical for the two series, actually.

The new book is quite a bit different from my first. It is more image-oriented. I had strict limitations on word count, so I had to really slash through the research and try to pick the most important or interesting information for each site (there are seventy sites included). This book totals about 14,000 words, whereas the Fire Island chapter of Long Island's Lighthosues: Past and Present alone had around 8000. This is a lighter read, but I hope the depth of research still shows somehow. I would love to do a more in-depth New York book, but I doubt I could find a publisher willing to front the cost for such a huge work -- it'd have to be a multi volume work covering over 1000 pages.

As for Amazon, I only make $99 per book, as opposed to the usual $100. smile Seriously, I make much less on those, but I've never been in it for the money. According to my contract, I have to sell my copies for no less than retail (19.99), so I am including an autograph, shipping and one of the magnetic bookmarks with Diane's photography, for $20.

I hope that answers any questions. Let Diane or me know if it doesn't.

PS - I have some cool new USLHS maps on my web site. Take a look when you get the chance.

Bob,

I think it stinks that you are contractually obligated to sell for a certain price but others are not.

Not a big deal- I ordered mine from the source, so to speak.
