I was looking at this LE and noticed these marks. Are they anything such as an artist mark or just paint that looks like letters?

Just as I thought.
I was going to say it was a Canadian made.
The Canadian’s had no quality control.
Bill told me that he would send lighthouses back to Castle Studious many times because of paint defects. Sometimes the same light. What you have is just a bad paint job probably cause by the painter going back over it trying to touch it up.

No difference in Lighthouse value. It is worth no more or less because of this. Possible if you ever sell this the buyer my question you if you had the light touched up. You can assure him it wasn't you, that it came from the factory that way and it is just one of the common problems with the early lighthouses.

Thanks Daniel! I was bored last night and was looking for seahorses. This just jumped out at me, so I got my Collector's guide and was reading on variations. I read the section on Artist's mark and wasn't sure if these were or not.
Bad paint job makes sense, Canadian made also had problems with paint chipping off-didn't they?

Actually it was the Malaysians that had the worst paint chipping. It was more of a paint pealing and it was generally on roofs of lighthouses like West Quoddy,
Old Point Loma and Portland head. There have been others but these have been the most prominent. Bill younger has acknowledged the problem to me especially the Portland head. There was a problem with some of the lighthouses being painted in a high moisture area, causing the paint not to adhere. The chipping problem we had with the “Canadian made”, was at the base since the felt bottom (flocking) did not go all the way to the edge.
