Anybody have an idea where the fence error was corrected? The Official Collectors Guide only indicates "When first issued. . . ." and shows a picture of a partial fence, but doesn't provide any detail as to approximately when the fix was made. An eBay seller has a piece with the flag number in the low 1,000s but it has the complete fence. I'd like to get one with a partial fence but don't know what number(s) I should be looking for to start the search.

Thanks,
Sandy

Sandy - You might want to try Collector's World (800-421-4270). That is where I bought mine and only paid retail about a year ago. They always have a good supply of the pieces that have one-two variations. Marie and Alex are very easy to work with.

Any thoughts on why the piece with the low 1,000s that I wrote about above would have the complete fence? Seller says it's NIB. Curiouser and curiouser. . . .

Ah yes, new in the box! I always love to see that on eBay especially when the pictures with it show a piece with obvious flaws.

Everyone is entitled to their own definition of "new", but in reality there is only one correct definition as we all know. Let the buyer beware!

I was going through my stock room pulling out HL's I'm getting ready to ship out, and I found my Hudson Athens flag #437. It's never been out of the box so I carefully removed it according to the two "grasp here" tags. It definitely is the version with the break in the fence.

I never noticed what a colorful roof this piece has on the lantern room. The things you find when you finally take a piece out of its box!

If you are interested in purchasing this piece, please check out my listing at the Trading Place here at the CF.

I don’t know if everyone put this together but it looks like we have a somewhat of a rare variation here. If there was 4,000 of the partial fence version and since the total production was cut short to 5,500 that means there should be around 1,500 of the full fence version.

Interesting view, Daniel! Will having one of each become a must for the collector who has to have "them all"?

Even if you have just one or the other, it still is a very nice looking HL.

I have # 2262 which has the fence missing next to the tower. Hope this helps with the mystery.

Way to go BobO
I have number 66 with partial fence.
At the time we heard about the two variations the production limit was to be 10,000 making the partial fence variation around 4,000 and the full fence variation around 6,000. With those number there was no reason to collect both versions.
However with the production changing to 5,500 which in turns changes the full fence variation to 1,500 that puts it in the collectable market.

Since the Hudson Athens is retired and was not considered as anything special this lighthouse was naturally absorb into the public. In other words collectors didn’t buy extras to flood the market incase there was to be some value later on. With patience and ebay the full fence variation will be found, but what will collectors be willing to pay for it. Is variation collecting only for the pre-1995 or is it still alive for newer lighthouses?

It is on my list to buy.
