Could someone please post a list of all the Winners Choice Limited Editions that have been produced? I have several of these and would like collect all of them, but I'm not sure which ones I still need. Also, anyone know if that contest is still going on with the new HL?
Thanks,
Roger

Sister Island (2000, Mombo choice)
Sherwood Point (2001, Jakers Choice)
Boon Island (2002)
St. David's, Bermuda (2004)

Don't recall 2003 and there is no record of the 2003 models on either the HL site or the archives site. Contest was not run in 2006 and 2007.

Thanks Dave

HL297 Sand Island AL was the 2003 piece.

I didn't realize that they had stopped that contest. Too bad. Didn't know that Sue was the first either.

I guess all I need to find is a Boon Island, then I'll have them all.

Roger
Hey, I just noticed that I finally made 100. I guess I should be ashamed of myself  It only took 6 years

I have Sue LeFever (Mombo) winning the "Register & Win" choice in 1999 - her Sister Island NY HL252 came out in Oct 2000 and retired in Mar 2001 [Guide p.308 - including a nice photo of Sue smiling and holding HL252]

I don't believe there were contests in 2004, 2005 or 2006.

Each of the pieces were "timed" available from introduction until about a year hence. I think the retirement date was set to the winner's birthday in the next calendar year, if memory serves.

I don't have a record of Sand Island AL being a Register & Win selection. HL297 was introduced in June 2003 and was retired at the end of 2006.

If anyone has documentation otherwise, please let us know by posting or emailing me.

You picked an interesting topic of collection. Usually collectors pick a region or just their favorites. Some collect the fresnel lens while other collect all the Christmas pieces. Can’t say I heard of anyone collecting the Winners choice as a group. Personally I think you picked a good set to collect. Their production generally ran a lot smaller than the standard issue.

John where able to come up with any production amounts for them?
Did some digging and came up with the production for these.

1. Sister island- 4,000
2. Sherwood Point- 3,500
3 Boon Island- at least 3,000
4. Sand Island- 3,000
5. St. David's, Bermuda ?
6. CAPE CHARLES, VA- 4,000
7. El Morro- less than 1,000

The Winner's Choice pieces were introduced at Rosemont (June) and retired 3/31 the following year, coinciding with the end of the contest. At least Mombo and Jakers choices worked this way. The model may not have physically been on the shelf until later in the year, but this was when they were introduced and retired.

Mombo\'s Choice

Jakers\' Choice

John, the sticker on the bottom on my Sand Island says "2003 Winner's Choice."

I believe Tom Klinker won the choice for the 2004 piece.

Sand Island

I don't remember this one being a winners choice either. It wasn't timed like a winner choice, but had a production of 3,000

John/Daniel - Sand Island was indeed the 2003 Winner's choice and St. Davids Bermuda was the 2004 Winner's Choice. The stickers on the bottom of the pieces don't lie or else Weasel and I have some variations. Looks like another correction the next time you update your Collector's Guide.

Tom Klinker won the choice in 2003.

Here\'s the discussion about it Maybe his choice was Sand Island. Does anyone have their Lighthouse Legacies saved and could check those for announcements? If so, who won the 2004 contest?

You are right Rich and Eric
I checked my Sand Island AP and on the box it does say "Winners choice 2003", But On its AP sticker it does not say winners choice it says it is a "3,000 limited edition".
For those with just an AP there is no mention of it being a Winners Choice on the AP sticker. You would need the box or the standard issue for the winners choice sticker.

Here is a question for AP owners of other "Winners choice" HL. Did they say they were a "Winner choice"? If I remember right I think they did.

Obviously this was not the standard Issue "winners choice".

I added Sand Island to my first post and its production amount.

I know Tom Klinker, he is a member of the TBHLCC and we kept pestering him on which Florida light he wanted, all he would say was he gave a list of choices to HL. When the light was announced I believe he stated that the Bermuda piece was his second or third choice not his first.

Maybe it's the fact that you win your pick in 03 but it takes a year for your light to come out and it's called an 04 light?

Thanks to all for the interesting feedback.

I started thinking about this question when I looked at the new '07 HL catalog. On page 3 under Alabama, it lists Sand Island as a "Winners Choice" and states that it is retired. I looked it up in the Collectors Guide, and on HL's web site and there was no mention of it being a Register and Win selection.

I just went to the basement and pulled my Sand Island out of storage and the stickers both on the box, and bottom of the piece, are marked:
"Winners Choice 2003 Sand Island Alabama #297"

Daniel, Originally my goal was to collect all Michigan Lights, then it expanded to all Great Lakes LE's and of course Sister Island and Sherwood Point fell into that category. Now I've managed to accumulate all of the Great Lakes LE's, all Fresnels', all Christmas pieces, all Lightships, and too many others that I have visited or just found interesting. I keep looking for new subsets to collect to keep me from the personally financially irresponsible goal of collecting the Original 17 frown

Eric, it was about 15-18 months from the time the person won the contest until their light was announced. Remember the discussions with Mombo and then Jakers badgering them to share their secret? Both did a great job keeping the info from prying eyes.

The 15-18 month time lag would pretty much be in line with what HL would need to research, spec, sculpt and create a working copy of the light.

(It has a photo of St Davids Bermuda
HL 311 7x6 timed edition
sugg. retail $65)

"St. David's, Bermuda Honored as the 2004 Winner's Choice, chosen by Thomas Klinker from Florida, St David's Lighthouse is as much a part of Bermuda landscape as the pituresque little islands that comprise this magnificent vacation destination. A visit to St. David's Lighthouse is sure to be a memory to treasure. Now you don't have to wait! Take a mini vacation and purchase your piece of paradise today."

You know, it is possible that the St. David's piece did not begin life as the Winner's Choice, but was transferred into that job. Could be that it is was all but set to go as a regular release when it showed up on Thomas' list of choices. Killed two birds with one stone. All it took was changing the labels, too late in the process to mess with the flag.

Pam I suspect that language reflects that it CAME OUT in 2004, but was chosen by the winner of the 2003 contest.

In the Collectors Guide, I did call it the "winner of the 2004 Register & Win contest".

So, what's new? When the original HL and the experts therein don't know for sure, what can the rest of us be expected to conclude? confused Do I understand correctly that there was no contest in 2002 and none since Tom Klinker won in 2003? frustrated Senior moments are bad enough but ....

From what I understand, and if I can keep it straight, if the person won the Register and Win for a piticular year it would be the following years Winners choice.

Sue - 1999 Reg. and Win = 2000 Winners choice

Stephen - 2000 Reg. and Win = 2001 Winners Choice

Ron - 2001 Reg. and Win = 2002 Winners Choice

Tom - 2002 Reg. and Win = 2003 Winners Choice

Okay-Drum roll please.
Volume 10 number 2 of the lighthouse legacy on page 3,
list the limited edition releases. First one on the page is the Sand Island Alabama.

Quote:
Sand Island is this year’s winner’s choice piece. Selected by Tish Jocelyn, in honor of her farther, Tom Marshall, who was stationed at this unique beacon during his service in the Coast Guard.
It has an edition of 3,000 and shows a picture of Tom Marshall In his uniforum.

In the Volume Eleven, Number Four Lighthouse Legacy, page 9 there is an annoucement

"2005 Register and Win Contest"

" Hurry to your local Harbour Lights dealer, purchase any full sized replica and send in the registration card, enclosed in each box, with proof of purchase for each piece purchased between January 1st, 2005 and March 31st 2005. You may win one of these exciting prizes...

"Choose your own lighthouse" for Harbour Lights to produce___you are in control.
What is your favorite lighthouse? You get to chose one for us to create and sell."

Then the article goes on to tell of the remaining prizes one could win.
In this article they included the 2004 Winner's Choice and winner as an example.

According to my Lighthouse Legacys, there was just one more____ the Final Issue that didn't offer anymore information and then the September 2005 on line Legacy, which only spoke of the 2005 Reunion and the winning the Gold Replicas.

It will be interesting to hear what Harry comes up with to unravel this whole thing.

Lots of research there! So, the correct order is Mombo, Jakers, Ron, Larry, and Tom with the years in which they won being 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and actual issue one year later for each. Right? confused You know how confused I stay! smile

Larry Dinges won the "pick a lighhouse" in 04 and his piece should have been released in 05.

Tish Jocelyn won in 02 and her piece was Sand Island in 03.

So we have

Mombo (Sue) 99 winner 00 piece Sisters Island
Jakers(Stephan) 00 winner 01 Piece Sherwood Point
Ron Ervi 01 winner 02 piece Boon Island
Tish Jocely 02 winner 03 piece Sand Island
Tom Klinker 03 winner 04 piece St Davids
Larry Dinges 04 winner 05 piece Unknown (Cape Charles discovered by Mombo)

I think that covers the known winners. Was there a contest in 05?

Answer: According to Mombo's post a little ways down,

Eddie Diaz 05 winner 06 piece unknown

1. What ever happened to Larry Dinges winner’s choice
2. Production count for Boon Island and St David.

OK, guys and gals here's another one!

On page 9 of the June 2005 on-line Legacy it says
"Ed Diaz won the "Opportunity to Chose a Lighthouse for Harbour Lights to Produce." It's up to you. Which lighthouse is near and dear to your heart, Ed? We will make it at your request!

Also in this Legacy:

CAPE CHARLES, VA HL324 Sugg. Retail $79 Edition 4,000 8 x 8 2005 Winner’s Choice! Congratulations to Larry Dinges of Springfield, Missouri, who chose this historic sentinel to be honored as our 2005 Winner’s Choice! Located on Smith Island north of the Chesapeake Bay entrance, Cape Charles is not accessible by car. It can be glimpsed from Fisherman Island and other nearby points, but your best view of this 120-year-old beacon is the one you bring home for your personal collection. Limited to only 4,000 pieces worldwide, you’ll want to reserve yours today!

So Larry won the contest in 2004 but his pick was the 2005 Winner's Choice.

So now I guess all we need to know is what Ed picked. I think it was only the first two lights made that had the name of the winner in the C of A. You could check the bottom of each of the 2006 releases to see if one is marked Winner's Choice. And if there was a contest in 2006 for a light to be made this year. And if there's to be a contest this year to be made next year....

Don't remember hearing about a 2006 contest.

If I'm correct, wasn't 2006 the first year HL wasn't owned by Younger & Associates?

If that's correct, sounds like the new owners discontinued the contest nono

Does anyone else wonder if there will ever be another "Winner's Choice" contest? Winning such a prize really gives a lucky collector a chance to add a new HL that may not have ever been considered in the past.

We need more contests from Harbour Lights! It's a win-win situation for both the company and its faithful collectors.

Lorie, I can't agree more. That seems to be the standard around here, though; a simple question will generate such great discussions with a lot of research and input from everyone. There is so much HL history and it's so hard to keep track of it all! That's part of what makes the forums so much fun. vhappy

If many of us were to think back to Mackinac Island, I believe it was said then that the El Moro piece was the winners choice piece.

Geez, Dave, that's a little much to ask. Many of us can't remember what we heard last week much less what we heard at the reunion. (We need a senior moment graemlin!) Plus with all the great activities going on at all times, we couldn't take it all in at once. frown

EL Morro

On the flag at the side of the light it says:
Event Exclusive
2006

No mention of winners choice.

So was there an 2006 winner for a 2007 piece?

There was no Register & Win contest in 2006. I wouldn't blame the new owners, considering the transition that must have been going on during the period from Nov 2005-Feb 2006.

The timing of this contest always kind of puzzled me. It applied to purchases made in the first three months of the year. With new introductions announced in January, it was sometimes difficult for the avid collector to find something new to purchase in those first three months.

On top of that, this is the season for the annual gift shows for retailers. A busy time (but not necessarily busy with retail sales) for manufacturers, no doubt.

But I suppose (don't know) that the first quarter of a year in the collectible retail business is the slowest time of the year. The Christmas/Holiday rush is over, collectors are paying down their resulting credit cards and the latest and greatest introductions aren't available to put on the shelves just yet because of shipping delays (and sometimes the Chinese New Year when factories close down.)

I suspect that those were the factors that Harbour Lights was trying to overcome when they first started this contest in 1999. Help the dealers move existing inventory to make room for what was coming down the pipeline. I don't know if it worked then or would work now or not.

But their purpose of 'driving collectors to the dealers' was worthy.

If you were designing or redesigning a program to:

1. Reward frequent purchasers
2. Drive buyers to retailers
3. Move old stock from dealers' shelves and
4. Allow collectors to get their 'hands on' new introductions

What would YOU propose?
