A continuation of this thread .

Quote:
Dear John,

Attached is my drawing of Erie Land Light. This will by used by our artist as a reference on how the piece should be laid out and for scale. As I mentioned during my talk at Mission Point, I ask a lot from the manufacturers for the price we hope to pay. After all there's no harm in asking. However there is often some compromise needed and so features such as the tree, flag pole or fence may have to be simplified or removed. So this drawing represents the best case scenario...

Harry

You can probably get a better view and see the notes he's written from the PDF Paper

Everyone's comments are welcome.

The wheelbarrow will be replaced with something else. More on that at this week's chat - Wednesday, Sep 28 @ 9:00 p.m. ET.

Note references to an 'excavation' on the plan. Read this document about various archeologic digs done around the Erie Land Light .

I was wondering how Harry did these drawings and he shared that with me. I haven't shared that with anyone else so all members are eligible to guess. I'll give a free Erie Land Light pin (when they come in) to the first person who can post their correct guess as to what software program Harry uses for these drawings. I check in several times a day. I won't comment on wrong answers, will only post when someone gets the correct software. One guess per person.

Have you ordered YOUR Erie Land Light(s)?

Don't wait. Order now at:

Does he use Microsoft Visio? I use that a lot for drawings, and it looks kind of Visio-y.

It looks GREAT! The details look really neat, and even if they get cut, the light itself looks great! (I'm assuming that the lighthouse is part of the sculpture no matter what.) I really, really like it! laugh

Like the extras, eventhough they are subject to change by the minute apparently. :p Thing is (we all have a song, and some can dance), I'm not going to be chatting Wednesday as we'll be on the road to Salisbury, MD to cut some of the trip off so we won't be driving all day Thursday. I think my girlfriend is taking her laptop so I may be checking in here and there (so inform us after the chat that couldn't be there, please) from up north.

The PDF file prints out very nice John. Thanks for that update. It comes out at 7 3/8 inches high and 4 3/4 inches wide which is just a little larger than what the finished product will be, but it looks great! It looks like a winner to me.

I have paid for my Erie Land Light and can't wait for it to arrive. So this already has me thinking about the next one the Collector Forums could (and hope) get Harbour Light to do. I know of a some of great "gone but not forgotten" from the Chesapeake Bay. Lets see, there is Love Point and Bloody Point as a start. And I am sure the other members know of many in this class are deserving of such an honour.

There are several types of software that will make the drawing that Harry created.

The first and most common type of software for drawings and is the one I use at work is:

AutoCad

DANIEL,

AutoCad is not only the first, and used most in the business community, but it is also the best and most versitile.

Bob,

You are correct. AutoCad is very expersive, but it's worth the price in the business world. I used it for years when I was still working, and it is fantastic. But I agree, probably too much money for the home environment.

What do some of y'all have against the American Flag? It is an integral part of many of the lighthouses I've seen. I like it. And I'm dang proud of it.

I don't understand about the ROCKS.

I have nothing against the American flag, I just don't like them on these lighthouses...they're fragile, unnecessary, and make the piece all that harder to clean and move around...

I agree with Bob about the flag. I believe the lighthouses are greatly enhanced when the flag is included.

I like the flag. They require great care but for what it's worth so do the HL's. Whenever I have to handle them, which isn't too often, I make sure that I am extremely careful. I'm sure everyone is!

My comment, and Rock's were not meant to be controverstial or political(or have anything to do with the American flag), just some playful fun jabbing about our likes and dislikes.

Well, if we are taking a poll I don't like the flag polls on the lighthouses. They are just too easy to break off. I just had to return a Fourteen Foot Bank because of this problem on the boat.

Rock, ...You're not alone. I voted "No". I'm not un-American. I have American flags on all three of my vehicles. I have an American flag on my boat. I have an American flag on my "company car". I display an American flag at my house on appropriate holidays and when weather permits.

We have some HL's with American flags because it was a suggestion people embraced. I get one of each new LE, AB, and Lens released. If HL issued a piece with a flag, I have it.

I don't exactly know how fragile the flag poles are. I have no idea how much it would take to bend a pole or break it off. I do know if the flag pole does get damaged, that HL will be worth a heck of a lot less to another collector.

Personally, I do not like the "cheapo-look" of those little plastic flags used by Harbour Lights. They have no choice. What else could you put on a flag pole so small? Their pieces have become very intricate in detail then they add something you would expect to find on a plastic toy at Toys-R-Us.

I have an Anchor Bay Chesapeake Lightship that has an American flag display off the stern. One problem with that flag, it's upside down. Why would this lightship model display a distress signal when it only displayed on a shelf in my entertainment center?

If I had my way, there would be no American flag on future HL's. Yet again, I'm only one of many who will voice their opinion on the "flag, no flag issue".

Bob
The above was a reply of mine at the "Voting Booth" thread. I felt it was important enough to put a copy of it in this thread in case some of our members don't read the other thread.

It is not anti-American or unpatriotic to request that no flag be put on the ELL. It's a matter of preference to not want something that could easily be damaged by improper handling.

God bless America!

Personally I like the flag pole on this one, but not on all. I like the one on Two Harobrs as well. If it's done like the Two Harbors piece, where it is installable/removable it works and is not subject to breakge in the packaging. As for breakage after packaging, I handle my pieces about once per year to clean the. I use a long soft sable brush and am aware of the flagpole, so it's never an issue. Like I said, as long as it's removable.

BTW, sales of the Forum exclusive are doing well.

Mike

Here's the artwork for the Erie Land Light pin. Based on Harry Hines' design for our Collector Forums Exclusive (without the flag pole.)

This will be a first -- a lighthouse pin actually based on a Harbour Lights design (with Harry's permission.)

Size will be 1-1/8" high - typical of this type of die-struck lighthouse pin you buy at many lighthouses.

You get one free for each Erie Land Light you order when you choose to pre-pay the cost in full.

Have you ordered your Erie Land Light?

Orders are coming in nicely. Thanks to those who have ordered so far!

We still have them available. In the next few weeks, I expect we'll have some photos of the wax sculpture then the white cast resin pieces and finally in November, photos of the paint sample.

Any Collector Forum member can order up to 2 pieces. Deposit is $25 for each one you order. You can choose to pay in full when reserving yours and you'll receive an Erie Land Light lighthouse pin (one for each piece you order.) We expect those to arrive in about 4 weeks and will ship them out on arrival to those who've prepaid.

Club leaders, please pass the word on to your Harbour Lights club members. In order to qualify to order, they simply need to join the Collector Forums - no charge to join, no charge for membership.

With an edition size of only 500, this will be among the smallest production runs for Harbour Lights.

Have you ordered yours? Click here to read more and begin the ordering process

A reminder to those who have already ordered - please also send in your deposit (or payment in full). Optionally, you can use the PayPal link or contact me directly to arrange the use of a credit card. For those that have mailed in a check, you should have received a note from me that I had received your check. If you mailed a check and have not received confirmation from me, feel free to email me at forums-hl-project @ sbcglobal.net (take out the spaces before and after the '@')

Harry is still awaiting the wax sculpture and will send us pictures when he receives it. This is quite the opportunity, getting to watch the development of an HL from the very start thru the various stages of design and production.

Word from Harry is that he expects to have some pictures to share with us probably by the end of the week. I'm excited to see what the first look will be. Remember, this is the first time that we as collectors have been able to follow along as the light makes its way thru the development cycle.

Can't wait to see the pictures; the pin is really a very cool one. Earlier in this thread someone said the flag is a better one. How better? As I have said before, I don't have the entire collection and never will. So this weekend when I had a chance, I took a good look at one of the Harbour Lights flags and they really are tacky. Will this one have at least a drape or fold to it? That would look much more natural. We all love the flag and I just want it to look more like a real flag.

I was wondering who to check with. I ordered my piece some time ago, and got an e-mail confirmation. I never sent in the order form though? Do I have to, or if I got a confirmation am I all set?

Thanks

You're right "scamper"! It does look great. I'm sure you feel like me and can't wait to see the finished product.

This very special piece has a lot going for it. It is a very limited edition. It's a great size and will fit in well with all the other HL LE's. The price is right. It may open the door for future Collector Forum specials which gives our members a very unique opportunity to introduce a lighthouse into their collection that may never have been made if it wasn't for the CF.

I like the diagramtic sketch and the pin of the Erie Land Light. This should be a nice piece to have.

Has anybody finally quessed on the graphic software used for the sketch? ...the guessing sorta fizzeled ....

My guess is for Adobe Illustrator!

It appears to be a vector based graphic instead of raster. For graphic images, it is more user friendly. I have used both programs for years, and Illustrator would be my first choice before I would use AutoCad.

Looking forward to receiving the "Light" in 2006!

No correct guesses on the software yet. smile The free pin offer still stands. Everyone is thinking 'high-end' it's at the other end of the spectrum.

And, speaking of the pin, Dave reports the sample came in yesterday. Here's a scan of it.

For comparison, here's the artwork we sent them:

Looking good!

I can't believe this light isn't sold out yet. I just ordered a second one - would have done it earlier but thought it was sold out long ago. Thanks for the pin info, John.

Very well done on the pin. What a great difference from the artist rendition.

Grace, those that paid in full "up front" for their ELL will receive the pins as our thanks for helping to keep the accounting end un-complicated. (One pin for each pre-paid-in-full ELL.) We will also have pins available for purchase, at a price TBB.

Didn't I read somewhere that Harry uses Drawing under Microsoft Word? If not that's what it looks like to me.

I'm gonna hold you to that promise, John - this isn't going to be like The Legacy, right?

Ouch - one right to the heart, Grace. You DO remember that there was a minor 'news story' that broke when the Legacy was supposed to be 'delivered'? Like the selling of the company?
