Thanksgiving Day, while the turkey was roasting, the family rode down the beach north past Corolla, North Carolina. (accessible by 4x4's) Stephen, please tell me if this is the Currituck LSS I was looking at. The distance would seem right. And thanks for posting your wonderful information giving me the idea to look for this. For great close-ups, look on Stephen\'s site ! Making the trip down the beach that much more fun, our transportation was my son's new H3... And, good Mom that I am, I did. Judy

Wow, what a nice past time while the bird is roasting. Looks like a great place! And Steve's pictures are brilliant too... How long did it take to get the sand out of the H3

Did you see the ponys while you were there?

Does one ever need an excuse to go to the beach? I still want that little cottage by the sea.

Looks like fun! I think that's Currituck LSS...we've had one of our annual dinners on the beach in front of it. Beautiful station. As for the H3...I'll restrain from comment. Nothing against the vehicle, really...it's just a Land Rover person thing. If you want to see ponies, you have to go into the backroads, where the houses all are. The ponies don't venture onto the shorefront...too many people driving too fast. It's tons of fun back there, too!

Judy, Yes, that is the station. Glad you were able to find it by my directions. And you can see the poinies out on the beach, but you just have to know when and where to go .

Thanks, Stephen!
Greg, I thought the ponies were supposed to be corralled now, even though a stray or two get out now and then. There was one up at the lighthouse not long ago.
You'll have to come down and see the ones at Shackelford Banks near Cape Lookout sometime. Now, THAT is an adventure to get to!

They are coralled, but the "corall" is the entire area north of the 4x4 beach. You may have noticed, while getting onto and off of the beach, that you crossed a few of those cattle grate things in the road. That keeps the ponies from going south of the border (in case they want to party or escape the pony draft). I guess there's also a fence. Otherwise, they're allowed free roam from the end of the road to the Virginia border. Worthwhile to check out...can't wait to go back there over New Years... I want to get down to the Shackleford area...I'd love to take an extra week on the way to the OBX one year, and take the "long route" through Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains NPs, cross the state, do Wilmington and Bald Head, spend a day on the Cape Lookout/Shackleford area, and then take the ferries up to Corolla. Maybe next year...cross-country trip prep, or "let's not kill each other living together in a car for a week!"
