I started a new thread so that there would not be too many images to load at one time.

Entrace to the 1874-Type Station

I think the wood work on these old buildings is so interesting.

Neat photos! I saw soem similar equipment at the Mystic Seaport. It's amazing how the LSS did all that they did with these (today) primitive tools. Mind Boggling! eek

I know what you mean. That is one of the reasons that I am so interested in the LSS's. Simple yet effective tools played such an important role in saving lives.

Greg,

To paraphrase George Carlin...

"How did primitive people know if they were doing the dances correctly?"

What I am trying to say is, back then, the tools weren't primitive .... they were "state-of-the-art" ...

Chicamacomico LSS, both the 1874 structure and the 1911 building are part of a complex that has been lovingly restored by the C. Historical Association. It is open for touring from March - October, and has a wonderful, knowledgable & enthusiastic staff and volunteers who love nothing more than to share their knowledge of all LSS's.

Besides the many exhibits throughout both buildings, they also participate in demonstrations depicting the daily lives of the surfmen. They have several costumed characters who get totally into character. Don't ask them a modern day question and expect a modern day reply. They will respond in character.

Last year, two of these folks, Linda Malloy and James, her now husband, married (for real) IN COSTUME standing on the ramp to the 1874 station.
A beautiful wedding!

If you visit there during open hours, you can't miss the gift shop, managed and "manned" by another lovely lady, Ann Liston who also sometimes dresses in character, and can tell you where to locate each and every remaining LSS structure on the Outer Banks. Don't miss the room dedicated to the women in the lives of the surfmen.

Chicamacomico LSS is in dire need of funding to continue their wonderful educational programs. You can help by becoming a member of the society. Contact them at chicamacomico@earthlink.net

Thanks, Stephen, for sharing these photos!
