Bob,

Did you mean to say that the 3rd Annual LI Lighthouse challenge would continue on May 19th and 20th?

Somehow I don't think it will be happening on a Sunday and Monday. laugh

I'll be missing this one- already have tickets for some Poco concerts on those dates. The first is in PA- near Philly and the second is in NYC at B. B. King's club.

I went to a Poco concert at Westbury last year on the Sunday of the Challenge after volunteering at Old field.

Bob,
So I missed last years challenge but made the Maryland and NJ ones.(It was my first year at doing these and was really fun!)

So if I decide to do the LI one this year...any tips on where to start and possibly where to stay overnite and then continue to make the best use of time?

Will it be the same lights as last years challenge? I have last years brochure so I have some kind of directions at least.

I found that by starting at a specific light location...you have a better chance of completing it by not going back over or back-tracking and wasting valuable time.

Beacon Bob,

Doing the LI challenge without any backtracking is a major challenge. The first problem is the distances involved the second is that it is very, very difficult to find anyplace out on the East End to let you do one night on a weekend in a hotel, motel or B&B. I've tried numerous times connected to the challenge and otherwise and never been able to do it.

If this year is like the past two the LI Lighthouse chapter will make arrangements with several hotels for special rates.

I stayed at the Marriott in Islandia at a very good rate for the property- less thn half what it would have been. It's a 4 star Marriott property. Breakfast isn't included but the buffet is good and not too pricey.

You do have to backtrack but if you plan well it still is no problem to complete the challenge. You just divide your trips into the Southern coast lights and the northern coast lights.

Here's a link to the info on last year's challenge. It has much needed information. the directions in last year's brochure are very good. Keep in mind that the further you go East on the Island the more traffic can be a problem due to the roads narrowing.

http://longislandlighthouses.com/challenge.htm

It's a fun weekend. We did the challenge the first year and then i volunteered both days last year. It looks like i'll miss it this year, though.

Do it. It's a fun weekend. Try and get out to Greenport Friday night for the kickoff lighthouse cruise. They do a great job of getting you close to the lights and if you have the regular tour guide you'll get great info on them.

Everyone is welcome! welcome Details of the LI Challenge will be posted as events are confirmed. It will be similar to the first two Challenges. The website should be up by the end of month, please be patient. Brochure will be posted on website and has specific directions to each lighthouse from the one your currently at. I was trying to give everyone here 'a heads up' on the dates after the first meeting on 2/10.
Bob

ps Here last years link which should answer a lot of questions, and has directions;

My intention is to do the LI Challenge and then the Saturday boat cruise with Dave. I don't think that there are too many lights that would overlap. This way it gives me a chance to meet some of you and also do the challenge.

I had a major league BLAST on the MD and NJ challenges last year!
I can't wait to get more details on the LI challenge. I will keep my eyes open for that info...

Thanks Bob for the info!

Okay...so it gives the weekend dates...do you know if it will be the same group of lighthouses as in last years brochure?
I want to try to figure out where to get a hotel that makes sense for the 2 day event.
Any good suggestions?

Lighthouses will basically be the same as last year. Old Field might be excluded. Hopefully we will get a participating hotel like the last two years.

Bob,

Why may Old Field be excluded? Town politics per chance?

Too much traffic for the neighbors?

Beacon Bob,

Go back and reread my post about the previous Challenges. This challenge is difficult to do without any backtracking. Staying in Islandia or nearby allows two circuits- North and South.

I can personally reccomend the Islandia Marriott- last year I had a room that was humongous with mucho open space and one of the smallest bathrooms i've ever had in a hotel room. the room was wedge shaped due to the design of the building with the bathroom at the smallest part of the wedge.

The price that the Chapter has gotten in the past is very hard to beat for anything worth staying at on long Island- $79 the first year and $89 the second. direct booking at the Islandia right now is $160 and up.

Bob,

You never did answer why Old Field is no longer part of the Challenge- local politics, unhappy neighbors or something else.

I'm sure that many will go to the lighthouse anyway and actually be more annoying thna the buses.

Thanks for the update to the website. I need to talk to the mrs about where she'd like to stay. do you know if they allow just 1 night or do they ask for 2 nights for the special rates at the hotels?

Bob,

There was no problem getting one night at the regular hotels- like the Islandia Marriott but the smaller mom & pop motels and B&B's out on the east end of the island almost always require two nights on a weekend in May.

I've tried about 4-5 times over the years to stay one night on the east end of the island on a weekend between May and September and I've never been successful.

Unfortunately Esther and I will be skipping the LI challenge this year. We won't be doing Dave's trip either as we had already signed up for the NELL Meeting the next weekend- and added about 7 days to it to continue on to NS, NB and Northern Maine.

In fact we'll miss all 3 of the challenges this year. It is the first time we have not been involved in the NJ challenge in some way- as volunteers or participants.

There's always next year, though. It might be time for the Triple Crown.

Diane,

I think that sounds like a great idea.

You should get to enjoy the challenge from the other side- it has it's charms as well.

I'm going to miss the interaction with other LH Wacko's- and not just HL Wacko's- at the Challenges this year.

We had over 225 visitors at Cedar Island yesterday on a predicted rainy day that turned out cloudy with no showers at all. Bill enjoyed the day greeting Challengers and distibuting thumbnails.
Sunny 72 predicted today for our Huntington Harbour day. Expecting more locals out on this nice day!
NELL had a crew of 7 stop buy!

Very busy day at Huntington Harbor. The SHL had two boats running in the afternoon. I would estimate 300+ at the lighthouse in the middle of the harbor.

Sorry I didn't make it this year. I got trumped by the wife!
Would it be that the replica didn't have a hole in the roof! Must be a current replica!
Hope to see this one again soon!
