This was a really stupid idea for an April Fools joke!

Operational Summaries for Apr. 1, 2006

D9: FALSE ALARM - APRIL FOOLS JOKE - LAKE SUPERIOR SMC: SECTOR SAULT STE MARIE
The D9 Command Center, Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie, Coast Guard Sector Detroit and the Farmington, Mich. Police Department investigated the report of a disabled and disoriented boater on Lake Superior. The reporting source, a concerned father calling from California, notified the Coast Guard stating his daughter and son-in-law, who reside in Detroit, Mich., reported to him that they were disabled in an unknown location on Lake Superior. Reporting source also stated that the son-in-law was planning on rowing a dinghy from the disabled boat towards lights on shore when the phone call disconnected. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie and the D9 Command Center immediately began tracing cell phone information and conducting PRECOMMS/EXCOMMS. Sector Detroit assisted by having local police interview neighbors for more information. Sector Sault Ste Marie was able to reach the daughter via landline. The daughter stated that the whole story was an April fool's joke meant to scare her father. All members involved were stood down and the father was informed that his daughter and son-in-law were safe at their home. CGIS was notified. Case closed

I'm thinking a stint in the lockup and a hefty fine in addition to reimbursing all agencies involved is an appropriate response for this act of supreme stupidity. Or, put them on a dinghy in the middle of Lake Superior (and leave them on their own) so they can understand why the agencies were concerned.
