Here's 3 very simple questions for all you movie buffs out there to answer pertaining to past Coast Guard Cutters. The questions are:

1. What are the names of the two Coast Guard Cutters to appear in movie that featured the "Coast Guard Racing Stripes" for the first time on a CG ship? Tell me the names/lengths/hull numbers of the Cutters, what was their homeport at the time and the name/year of the movie.

Rich,

I'm with Paul on this--I can't imagine what you consider complicated. . . .

It's really quite easy if you are a movie buff. If you have seen the movie, and both of you are old enough to have seen it, you will have seen the hull number and the name of one ship in the close up. The second ship is in the distance steaming into the scene and then they switch to the first ship for the closeup. One ship(closeup ship) is homeported on the east coast where the movie takes place and the second ship(distance shot) is on the west coast where they filmed some of the scenes. There is also a submarine and an ocean liner involved. That's the clues and of course you need to study Coast Guard History.

Well the movie is "Assault on a Queen" 1966

Both ships were Owasco Class Cutters

One of them was USCGC Androscoggin (WHEC-68) 255 footer out of Key West

The other was USCGC Minnetonka (WHEC-67) 255 footer out of Long Beach

Your correct on both ships but incorrect on one of the homeports. Do some further research for the correct homeport. Also, what year was the movie put out and which ship was supposed to have rammed the submarine?

Was the Androscoggin out of Miami?

Added the year 1966 to the movie

Yes, out of Miami Beach on MacArthur Causeway. The Andy was the ship that was supposed to have rammed the submarine while the Minney had the Andy's hull number temporarily painted on it for the distant shots taken in California.

I was stationed on the Andy right after the movie and took a cruise to Viet Nam on her between 67-68. I heard all about the movie from the guys that were still on her.

Let me see if I can come up with another one tommorrow just a little bit harder to solve.

By the way, is there anyone out there that saw the movie "Assult on a Queen" with Frank Sinatra? One of my best friends in the Coast Guard, a 3rd class Electronics Technician, was the guy playing a Quartermaster that spotted the submarine as he was standing on the flying bridge. It was funny that an Electronics Technician was chosen to play a Quartermaster. They said he looked more like a Quartermaster then an Electronics Technician because he had a rugged looking appearance. He never lived that down from what he says.
