LEDs are the energy efficient wave of the future. The technology is really advancing rapidly. Look around you - more and more flashlights using LED technology, allowing them to be smaller. Our police cars are converting to very low profile LED lightbars which still put out very visible warnings but use less energy and give the car a lower profile (I hate it when you can't look in your rear view mirror and see the good old "cherry bar" of a police car behind you...) Those of you who went with us after the 2003 Grand Rapids HL regional to climb the Grand Haven inner light may remember seeing that the lighting apparatus was an LED one: Very dependable, smaller size while producing the same light, low energy usage allowing longer battery life, meaning fewer service calls by the ATON Teams - I think this is just a good example of the CG finding a way to provide the same great service with their ever stretched resources.

Paul Conlin (PFC) sent this picture of the light being displayed at Avery Point and asked if I would post it. Another excellent example of modern LEDs in use today.

The nice thing, too, is that the solar panels are self-contained in the unit. So no more (or at least less) ugly outdoor panels!
I'm guessing that in the lighthouse world of 2017, we're going to have few, if none, of the current DCB optics left. LED's the future, baby, from flashlights to lighthouses.
