In your opinion, does visiting lighthouse ruins (not just a site with no evidence)or one that has been converted to just a light (Rebecca Shoals) count towards the number of lighthouses you have seen?

I'd have to say it does. When I've visited ruins, I still get a sense of the history from the surroundings. And those butterflies in my stomach, that's got to count for something.

I would say yes to ruins. I also count replicas that are built to actual size (i.e. Bethel Bridge, MD and Lazaretto Point, MD). If it has been replaced by an "aid to navigation"....well, that's a tough call.

Whether there's one shingle missing from the roof or the entire tower missing from the stone base, it's still a lighthouse and there will always be a story associated with the site. You might not be able to climb it, but if you have an imagination you should still be able to "see the light" and visualize what it represented.

Absolutely!!! "Ruins" are just as much about the lighthouse adventure as anything, and their history is just as important, if not, maybe even alittle bit more because that's all is there is left of it.

I have to agree that visiting a site is just as good as visiting an existing lighthouse. MY favorite Lighthouse is the Bullocks Point Lighthouse in Rhode Island. I remeber just the base being there and even that is gone today. When they dredged the chanel into Providence, they removed the base that it stood on. Bert
