Please post your interest in an Apostle Island Boat trip prior to the reunion in this thread.

I am still working on this trip with the Keweenaw Star so details as to dates, etc. have not been worked out yet.

This would leave out of Houghton, MI.

Suzanne,

I would also be interested. Please keep all of us posted relative to the particulars. And Thank You in advance. If it turns out anything like the Door County and Lake Superior festivities, this outing should be fantastic.

We would also be very interested if it were on the weekend before the reunion, a weekday would be unlikely for us.

Having just gone on a boat tour of the Apostle Islands this past August, I want to reiterate how much better the Keweenaw Star is for picture taking than the boat tours from the Apostle Islands. You can take pictures from the bottom or top decks.

The boat captain also did an excellent job maneuvering the boat around for providing all angles to get the best pictures. laugh

Suzanni,
I would be interested in a boat trip of the Apostile Islands. Would it still sail from Houghton?

I would be interested in this trip. Have convinced my husband that I must attend this reunion, so I want to get in as much lighthousing as possible! laugh

How much earlier than the Reunion are you thinking of scheduling?

Would only be for one.

Suzanne,
I'm definitely interested and planning to mark my vacation off as soon as the new calender are available. Please count on me to help in any way that I can. The Keweenaw Star was a wonderful ship from which to view and photograph the lights. Do you think the Captain will be performing a wedding ceremony on this cruise?

Suzanne,

Thanks for checking into this. Although I don't think we're going to attend the reunion because Randy won't have enough vacation time, we are interested in the Apostle Island cruise if it's scheduled on August 26, 27 or 28.

Keep us posted!

Suzanne,

MJ and I are interested in joining the fun on this pre-reunion tour. If it is half as much fun as the recent tours from Houghton, that you (and your helpers) planned, it will be a blast.

Suzanne,

Correct me if I'm wrong- by my calculations it's about a 6 hour drive from Houghton, MI to St. Ignace, MI. It's been a few years since I've been in that area- my brother lived in Marquette for years and I visited him several times.

I am aware that you have no specifics yet but are you taking into consideration that with the start time of the Reunion being 3 PM (as stated elsewhere) and ending about Noon (also stated elsewhere) that there will need to be a travel day between the boat trip and the Reunion- either way.

I know you have stated the intent to do it before the Reunion but just wanted to cover either scenario.

SIX HOURS FROM MARQUETTE? WOW! And add a couple hours on top of that to drive from Houghton where the boat docks to get to Marquette. We are talking about a major full day's drive. I'm beginning to wonder how my poor body will react to that portion of our adventure. Oh well...... BUT I STILL WANT TO ATTEND BOTH RESTIVITIES. Hope the lighthouses enjoy our visits.

Bob,

Reread the post- it's about 5-6 hours from Houghton, MI to St Ignace.

I know that doesn't help much but it's something. laugh

Don't make the drive worse than it is Bob! smile
Roughly: St. Ignace to Houghton - 6 hours:
St. Ignace to Newberry - 2 hours
Newberry to Marquette - 2 hours
Marquette to Houghton - 2 hours

I'm assuming that, in view of the distance, the Apostle Island boat trip would be sometine prior to Sunday, Aug. 28. As much as I want to see the Apostle Islands, I don't have the vacation time to take off more than the week of the Reunion.

But, if I'm wrong, and the trip is going to be on Sunday, then we might be interested.

Sorry to one and all. I misread the post by Dennis. Still need to get my glasses fixed - but that's no excuse. Six hours is still a long drive for me, but I'll make it. I just HAVE to.

Houghton to St. Ignace is 261 miles, or 5 hours and 43 minutes, according to Mapquest. Realistically, driven straight through with no stops other than fuel, it's about 5 hours. A day for travel would be more realistic because then one could lighthouse on the way down to St. Ignace, or on the way to Houghton, or both...

If the boat is leaving from Houghton and heading for the Apostle Islands, that seems to be quite a haul. About 100-125 statute miles. Isn't that gonna take about 8-12 hours in good weather?

How many does this boat sleep? How big is the bilge? How much fuel does it carry? (I can't think of any more nautical terms.)

I'll jump in here until Suzanne gets home from work, so....

very simply she is thinking about a Wed., Thursday, Friday before the reunion.Which gives one time to travel to Mackinaw City, or whatever destination you have. There are lights to see on the way from Houghton.

She'll fill you in on her thoughts, and tentative plans.

John, the boat is sort of similar to Shepler's Ferry, but far nicer and a bit bigger. It is not an overnight boat - the group will have to overnight on land somewhere. My guess is one night would be in Bayfield, WI, where the day cruises to Apostle depart from, and one night might be in one of the Minnesota ports or perhaps Thunder Bay.

Well John, during the last trip on Lake Superior, the boat slept about eight lighthousers at various times during the excursion. As far as I know, however, not one person threw their cookies overboard.

Fuel? I didn’t notice any gas stations along the way. But if they can refuel airplanes in flight why not a boat? I don’t know about the size of the bilge, but some of the guys including me carried a handsome bulge protruding in the stomach area.

Pam thanks for the time frame – Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the Reunion. That helps a lot. See y’all there!

I have tentatively planned Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (August 24, 25, 26) for this trip. Things are not totally planned yet, but we are looking at staying in Duluth overnight and in Silver Bay overnight. This would allow some land exploration time in Duluth and at Split Rock. We would see 15 lighthouses.

Then Saturday and Sunday could be used for driving towards St. Ignace visiting lights on the way.

The boat is a 110 footer and much better than Shepler boats for photographing lighthouses. People sit casually at tables, not in long rows of people. People are also free to move about the ship at all times.

Hey Suzanne,
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do the tour after the reunion. Of course, I am speaking only for myself. Since I am still in school, I cannot get to Michigan until Saturday, the 27th of August, thus missing the Apostles tour all together. I will be missing a week of school(since we go back the last of July) and cannot possibly miss more days. I was hoping that you would schedule it on the three days after the reunion.

Oh well, just one person's lament!
